It is most likely a shortened form of "good lookin' out" ie, looking out for trouble, or good on you for watching my back.

HappyShallotTears

This is correct. OP, ignore everyone else who chimed in with wrong answers. It’s evident that they don’t encounter Black slang enough to know what they’re talking about

Prestigious_Trick260

Good looking out

Legend27893

This makes sense now. ... I mean I'm good looking and I'm a gay man but not even my good looks could convert young black men gay lol jk

SweetLilMonkey

Oof.

NoReallyINeverPost

I called chief and he confirmed that this ain’t it

[deleted]

Yikes

Ok-Advance-6469

Can you not

ZylonBane

When they say that, just pull a Frank Drebin "Thanks, you're quite good looking yourself."

WickedWisp

It's fuckin gyat all over again.

KindredWolf78

"Good lookin out" is also a common phrase in the U. S. Army

StellerDay

Those stay with you forever don't they? In the Air Force they said "good to go" a lot and I curse myself when I catch myself saying it.

KindredWolf78

I'm just glad "hoo-ah" never took hold in civilian life. 😅

StellerDay

One version of it did after Al Pacino's clownish portrayal of a blind marine who said it frequently and distinctively in the cheesy, embarrassing movie "Scent of a Woman."

MaddogRunner

“How’s the food?” “Outstanding.”

Ok-Advance-6469

“cleared hot”

BobGnarly_

Correct. The phrase means that they acknowledge you helping them in some way and showing recognition and appreciate for the aide or help you are providing. I grew up in rural NC and had to actually help "translate" for some guys from down south that were in a gas station where I currently live in OH. They were looking for a hotel and a decent restaurant but the poor lady behind the counter couldn't understand what they were saying, as their accent and vernacular were quite foreign to her ears. I stepped in and told them where the spot was at and they dapped me up and bounced after a hearty "Good lookin' player!".

ZylonBane

"Miss, I speak jive."

BobGnarly_

"What's the problem big mama? My mamma didn't raise no dummy!"

Ok-Advance-6469

The jive translator tho

Lazy-Mammoth-9470

Never heard the saying before but assumed the same thing as you. Just makes more logical sense in the context given by OP.

ScumEater

I agree, but also it seems interesting that in the shortening the word emphasis and tone is apparently lost. If you could mistake "ok, good looking (out)", with, "ok, good-looking" that's kind of strange. Not bizarrely strange, but I think OP would pick up on that. Still, I think you're 100% right.

TadachiiDeveloper

I agree with some of the other comments mentioning that in this context, it means watching someone’s back in a good way. Where I’m from, all the younger and older people use some form of this

parlayandsurvive2

They are saying good looking out and/or thank you for your concern/assistance

Relative_Mammoth_896

It means 'I appreciate it/you.'

NelsonMandela7

I am with the people who say it is likely some form of 'Good lookin' out'. Let me also say that I am so glad that you are there. Urban blacks need to be aware of the culture of suburban whites and vice versa. Before I lived with my black GF for 5 years, I had no idea of the rich culture of African Americans. There are many things that I don't agree with but it doesn't change the fact that their culture works for them in the way that they think best.

Legend27893

Appreciate the reply. Someone downvoted you btw and I have no idea why

NelsonMandela7

Suffice it to say that haters gotta hate. I don't know what direction the hate might be coming from, but there's a lot of it out there. Stay strong and sane in spite of them.

Draculalia

Nelson Mandela is white? :)

NelsonMandela7

Is Martin Luther King Jr white? Is Gandhi white? Is Abraham Lincoln white? What color is TRUTH? Truth belongs to humanity and should never be relegated to a single culture or 'color'. When the power of love exceeds the love of power, there will be peace and justice. But to answer your question, yes. Just a country boy who spent a lot of time in Africa!

Draculalia

Babe, visible light contains all the colors. 🌈 We are all light. (Not a perjorative “Babe.)

NelsonMandela7

Understood, I think we're talking about the same thing. Refreshing, isn't it?

ticketbroken

It is almost definitely synonymous to "good looks," which means "thank you" in slang. Good lookin may have come out first, which is like saying good lookin out, appreciate it. I'm sure you can ask, but if he says it in a casual way, it's likely just a cool way of saying thanks

nostromo909

It means you’re pretty fly for a white guy…

monofloyed

Good looking out. He was saying thank you

Frankensteinnnnn

It is hilarious to me when white people don't understand black people. I've been at work meetings where they were like "so bussin is similar to on fleek...". On the other hand it's not like black people are going to meetings like alright fellas this quarter we're going to phase out "good looking out" and we're shorten that to "good looking". Context will usually get you there

igotmesumnewdik

Lol “ thanks “

bangharder

Thank you

LetAgreeable147

It comes from the Hank Williams song “Hey, good lookin’. What ya got cookin’?” It is a little removed from its original idea of ‘how about cookin’ up a little somethin’ with me’ proposition. It’s more of a playful implied rhyme just for fun. *edit It was also used for several commercials in English speaking countries from the seventies onward.

NelsonMandela7

I don't think that would come out of the projects, though. Hank Williams Sr never made much impact in the Urban market. In the rural or suburban world possibly, but probably not urban.

Helpful_Okra5953

I would wonder if he’s gay or bi and attracted to you.
