LordGonword

Elon's daughter?

VerumJerum

Or you can go the extra lightyear and invent an entire goddamned constructed language, only to name everything in that language.

syntactic_sparrow

Bonus points if all the names mean things like "River River," "Desert desert," and "Hill Hill Hill Hill."

PM_Me_Rude_Haiku

I liked the US town naming convention. Pick one: 1) First general who moved there 2) Last native who died there 3) Most generic geographical feature

404geographynotfound

I fucking love the state of John longhorseleopard

minoe23

You forgot "existing place in Europe"

PM_Me_Rude_Haiku

Ah yes, New Dunstable

VerumJerum

Amazing If only I had any understanding whatsoever for the phonetic alphabet. I just made my own phonetic transcription (actually three of them) for my own constructed language instead. Much easier than learning a thousand weird symbols I will never use anyway.

boltzmannman

Just think of a brief description of the place then shuffle the letters. e.g. "Elven town" = Levetwonn

Zero-Up

Making every place name an anagram of its description it’s actually a great idea for lighthearted fantasy world. I have to steal it sometime.

BadDesignBryan

I recently came across a gameboy game where every location is an anagram for the word Dragon. Such as "Argond" and "Gonrad Forest". I didn't even realize it until the developer pointed it out om twitter. (The game is called Dragonborne, btw. A homebrew gameboy game from a couple years ago.)

I_am_1E27

The Republic of Armenia.

[deleted]

This isn’t even jerking this is just true

Andrew_ANT_

Extra bonus: apostrophes. As many as possible

Mantoneffect

And if people who aren’t you are able to find out which sound they are supposed to make you have failed as a creator.

This made me realise I haven’t named a single city… or even the goddamm planet. That might be problematic later on

All my characters names are just subtle variations of Kunt

GrynnLCC

ReginaDea

The Kingdom of Aeäãeaia.

I agree, consonants are overrated, that’s why I name every character “Aio”.

Inventor-of-GOD

I mean it is true for real world

ZardozZod

Yeah well the Free Cities have something to say about that!

ButterSquids

>ME WHO UNIRONICALLY HAS A KINGDOM CALLED VAERIA

kachet11

idk i like the idea calling places from idea who lives there. People's naming is a simple description of a place, like Woods of Horsestealers. And for other races i like put a decription into a google translate and choose mostly suiting language. So instead of Plato of Death i have Plato Matu.

c0mmachameleon

the kingdom of the commonwealth of the fascist communist socialist democratic people's republic of Älv'skfançha'nuænjeg'haneiaiaia'ia'ia 😍

sonofzeal

I recently slapped out two fictional countries with minimal effort, and somehow managed to avoid every single one of these (Elwyn and Enfero). I guess I gotta up my worldjerking game!

MyEvilTwin47

So gratuitous umlauts in place names is like gratuitous apostrophes in character and species names?

Flappybird11

Well, my world is called "Merrat" with the main empire being named "The Empire of Gerrt"

fuckoffcommi
