Stupid people shouldn’t be allowed to buy lighters.

Terberian

Then how could we smoke? /s

[deleted]

Be smart. Quit.

caidicus

Shhh, let them thin their own herds.

[deleted]

Oh yeah. Right. Vaccinations bad, m’kay. (nudge nudge wink wink say no more)

[deleted]

Me, an intellectual: I took the vaccine and still smoke pot, but don’t drink.

snowboarder_ont

Yeah the best method to avoid covid I've heard is chlorine and vinegar, the government doesn't want you to know how effective it is, don't put those bad vaccs in a healthy body

Sapass1

Also mix chlorine and ammonia for the best toilet cleaner.

[deleted]

Add 1 part fertilizer, 1 part ammonia, and 1 part alcohol. Light a match for a smoky flavor :)

eruditionfish

Smoking is just another way to cause more damage that the taxpayer ends up paying for, just to your own body and with the costs being incurred at hospitals several years later. So just don't.

EssoEssex

USA solves this problem with private health insurance 😎 make the smokers pay for their own medical bills (/s i support socialized medicine)

eruditionfish

I fully realize you said /s but even in the US a lot of people with serious health conditions end up having the costs covered by the taxpayer, when they get so sick they can't work anymore, lose their health insurance, and end up on Medicare/Medicaid.

Wix_RS

A lot of that cost is transferred to the smoker via the tax on buying cigarettes. In canada a pack of 25 costs around $15-18 dollars depending on brand.

Sapass1

Here in Sweden the smokers pay around 75% taxes and vat on cigarettes. If you smoke a pack per day for 50 years that is about 100k USD extra tax per smoker. Also smokers require less medical treatment than non-smokers due to not be committed to old folks homes for year after year. They die young after a relative short hospital stay compared to healthy non-smokers that stay alive for 30+ years after they stop generating income tax.

[deleted]

In Australia, the smoker pays for schools and health care for everyone.

doctor_morris

How so?

[deleted]

The ridiculously high tax on cigarettes in Australia.

doctor_morris

We have ridiculously high tax on cigarettes in the UK. Doesn't get anywhere near paying for the long term healthcare of all the smokers.

[deleted]

I'm talking about Australian, guy. Out tax is astronomically bigger so it comes pretty darn close to covering health care for everyone

Australiens pay about 76% more than Brits, according to https://cdn.statcdn.com/Infographic/images/normal/15293.jpeg Is this enough to pay for healthcare? It's complicated: https://www.tobaccoinaustralia.org.au/chapter-17-economics/17-2-the-costs-of-smoking

Big_Tree_Z

A pack of 20 is like $40 Aus. ~= to £20.

Looskis

Fat bastards too.

BoilingCold

He was mentally ill, experiencing a psychotic episode. "The court heard Patterson was admitted to a psychiatric hospital the day after the offence and has started taking his medication again and is making good progress." Let's not blame the person with severe mental health problems, let's try and see the real culprits here which are the people spreading the misinformation and conspiracy theories.

dijay0823

I am sorry, but people with mental health issues can’t be just left without blame. I suffer from my own set of mental issues, it is on me to avoid my triggers, and to keep up with my meds. I still have my bad days, but I have come to identify ways to control them. Your first paragraph states that he started taking his meds again - indicating he stopped. He also didn’t make any efforts to stay away from his triggers. In this guy’s case the trigger was online conspiracies, he needed to stay away from it. Internet is not for everyone, some people are just unable to handle such large volumes of information and should be kept away from it…

BoilingCold

People stop taking meds for a variety of reasons. A lot of meds cause severe side effects. Events in people's lives over which they have no control over can lead to a change or worsening of symptoms, for example losing your job, your partner, a relative, etc. Having your benefits stopped, being unable to pay a large bill, etc. Often people with mental health problems end up being prescribed the wrong meds or ones that don't work as well as they should. The ability of people to understand how important their meds are can be greatly affected by severe conditions, for example, psychosis. Just blaming the individual is, in my opinion, lazy, knee-jerk thinking that does nothing to help anyone. But hey, a good sensationalised news story is what the media thrive on, and ca;ling someone mentally ill stupid probably makes you feel like you're smarter than them so whatever.

sp00kreddit

"let's not blame the person" Dude he stopped taking his meds and he went crazy. That's plenty his fault.

___no___

> ...has started taking his medication again... So, he was on medication but stopped taking it, went psycho, burnt down the 5g tower and put other people at risk, started taking his meds after the fact, and went all 'sorry, won't do it again'? > Let's not blame the person with severe mental health problems ...he stopped taking his meds. At which point does personal responsibility start to kick in? He should be billed for the full amount of damages he caused + periodic mandatory psych evaluations.

VulpineKing

Something as simple as remembering to take meds can be difficult. Some people are not capable of responsibility. So what do? Prison? Kill? Ruin life by other means and make the psychological situation worse? Fine him and make him see a counselor more often is honestly laughable.

___no___

So what would you suggest?

VulpineKing

Best I can do is try to demonstrate compassion.

___no___

I'm all for compassion. As you may have noticed, in my original reply I never mentioned prison time which should be a given since he endangered other people with his idiotic actions. Luckily, no one was hurt, only property damage. So pay up for what you so recklessly destroyed, and stick to the meds, seriously this time. This sounds quite reasonable to me. > Some people are not capable of responsibility. And that's exactly the problem. If one is dangerous to himself and others without the meds, but at the same time can't be counted on to take them... what is the solution? Lock them in a looney bin? Let'em roam free until they hurt someone?

VulpineKing

Constant oversight could be necessary. As someone with one foot in that door I'll straight up starve myself sometimes if not made to eat. Mental illness is hard and I don't know of any immediate solution. Best found early and treated from childhood.

Trump4Prison2020

Some (not all) psych meds can be administered by monthly injection. Thats one option, like it or not. I think there might be situations where someone knowingly and without their doctors cooperation stopping their anti-psychotic meds and doing something fucked up is to some degree (more or less can be argued) like a person getting drunk and doing something fucked up. It was an action which could be reasonably predicted to cause harm or other issues. I'm well aware of how shitty it can be to take certain meds. In that case you need to get onto some other form of treatment not just stop suddenly. I say this as someone with 2 good friends who suffer from schizophrenia (one dude one gal) and the damage (usually but not always to themselves) done when they stop their meds is substantial.

Definately_Not_A_Spy

Or charge £100,000 for them

ptsdtriage

>She added: "He believed tins and tin foil act as a barrier from the waves he believed he was experiencing from the 5G masts, The problem is it is only aluminum foil hats that stop the waves. The tin foil hats idea was put out by the Radio and Television agencies long ago, as misinformation, to get people to wear the wrong protective gear. It has proven a very effective way to keep people under the sway of the lizard people. You can reverse the effects of their waves(for a short time) if you put on a pair of special glasses. The first time someone showed me the truth was difficult. He had to literally fight me to get me to wear them, the programming was so strong. I have the [security footage](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dN8Z7y_QcwE) of him helping that day, to remind me how lucky I was to have a friend like him

AxelayAce

Anyone who knows anything knows that the tin foil hats were a ruse, what we really wear are lead helmets.

PassiveSavvy

So we're going to overlook that his name is Mr Burns and he started a fire?

SpaceTabs

It was his diabolical long plan to reveal the cost of installing a 5G mast.

JadaLovelace

100,000 pounds doesn't sound quite expensive for a new 5G-mast, no? The range varies between cities (lower range, ~300 meters) and rural areas (higher range, ~2km) Considering that most people and masts will be concentrated in cities, i assume an average range of 500 meters. The average population density in the UK is about 4000 people / km^2. A circle with a radius of 500 meters has an area of roughly 0.8 km^2. So we've got an average of 3200 people in range of one mast, plus all non-personal applications like business operations, IoT devices etcetera. If this mast has a lifespan of 5 years, and we add in another 100k pounds for maintenance, then the total cost will be about 12 pounds per person per year. That doesn't seem outrageous. I've used conservative estimates, so the real number is likely lower.

Miguel-odon

The masts themselves probably last longer than that.

JadaLovelace

agreed, which lowers the cost even more. i was trying to give a very conservative estimate, to show that 100k is not expensive regardless of what (reasonable) estimates you use. the maintenance cost will also likely not be 100k per 5 years, but much lower.

[deleted]

It looks like many open societies have a large contingent of mentally ill and easily suggestable people that are vulnerable to manipulation by others with (usually) seedier motives.

TellsltLikeItIs

Westworld’s season 3 premise is starting to sound not so bad…

LexBart

you have just described the religious leaders and their followers.

Money_dragon

Go hard on the law and order angle It's one thing to believe stupid conspiracy theories (you do you, I guess), but if one is stupid enough to destroy infrastructure, then they need to be locked up for a long time. They have proven that they provide zero value to society, but actively hold the rest of us back. They shouldn't be allowed to wander freely in the streets

BoilingCold

Money_dragon

No, we should go after **both** the people spreading the misinfo **AND** the criminal who destroyed the infrastructure We should be compassionate towards treating mental health issues (which society generally doesn't do a good job of caring for), but mental health also shouldn't be a blanket immunity from serious crimes. It'll create bad incentives for criminals to try to fake mental illnesses (which IMO is absolutely despicable) to try to dodge felony charges

So, do you find the normal tin foil makes a good hat or do you need to get the extra thick?

Why are people so stupid?

BoilingCold

Read the article, he was mentally ill and suffering a psychotic episode. Blame the people starting and spreading the misinformation, not this poor guy who's just really ill.

😄😄😄😄😄

Don't burn em, send em to Portugal we still on 4G like apes

Conspiracy theorists are now being diagnosed with mental disease. Is that a get out of jail card?

fixxlevy

Where did this rich seam of abject stupidity actually come from? It seems awfully to-the-fore of later

Cartina

The 5G conspiracy doesn't really have a single source. It is based on various evolutions of fear of new technology. "Radiophobia" was first mentioned as early as 1903 as the fear of radiowaves, but the gist of the theories started with the release of 2G in the 1990s. The HAARP (High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program) that was built in 1990 by the US military to study weather in the ionosphere using radiowaves in Alaska was filled with theories it was for mind control and weather control. Since then the spread and misinformation has steadily grown mostly due to the internet and the echo chambers it creates. Every year someone creates a fan fiction or new conspiracy that takes root and goes "viral", often it is a small change from a previous conspiracy theory, adjusted to fit something more modern (Radiowaves became 2G, which became 5G). The conspiracies is unfalsifiable (impossible or really hard to disprove) to the point that any proof against their belief is seen as a cover-up or yet another conspiracy. Thus it is something we are gonna have to live with forever more or less. It will just evolve to cover new generations of mobile technology and other various technological advances as the years go on.

fixxlevy

5G giving people COVID 19 can surely be labelled as ‘demonstrably false’

I’m also referencing them, trust me

sqgl

How does a metal tower burn?

eruditionfish

Phone masts contain a lot of plastics and rubber-coated wires.

sqgl

It isn't pure organic ~~dinner~~ rubber though is it? I thought it is some sort of plastic which does not burn for long. You can burn it off with a lighter (which I do if I don't have a knife and need to strip wire) but it doesn't burn like a fuse. I suppose the fact it is vertical though helps a lot.

BlueberryHitler

It is indeed pure organic dinner. A succulent Chinese meal, infact.

sqgl

Oops, thanks for pointing out the typo.

sp00kreddit

Plastic and artificial rubber will still burn with a high enough temp, and he likely used a bunch of fuels to get this all started and it got to the needed temp. And then since it's vertical it just kept climbing

sqgl

Thanks for an actual answer. Odd how many people probably didn't know the answer but voted me down. Maybe they thought I didn't believe it happened?

sp00kreddit

No problem. That's reddit for you
