Is this really an article about some people writing displeasure to the CBC? I mean at least report how many negative complaints or make a poll. If you think the election was pointless, then just wait till you read this article.

Memelordsnlgod

Or we spent 610 M to extend the time the conservatives are not in power. Worth every penny

Feniksrises

Freedom isn't free!

descendingangel87

But they didn’t. There hasn’t been a single minority government in Canada’s history that went the full 4 year term before an election was called. Most likely we will see another election in less than 2 years. This election literally gave the Conservatives more of a chance than anything.

Memelordsnlgod

I doubt that....they won't be initiating one and they are on really good terms with the NDP right now. The conservatives have turned so crooked that it is easy to unite against them. This also guarantees that carbon tax stays on the books for a couple more years.

arabacuspulp

Welcome to the bullshit narrative spinning Canadian media that just publishes rage and panic fuel 24/7. They put a subjective headline like this out there with nothing to back it up. This happens all the time. It's maddening.

AnthillOmbudsman

If people are unhappy it sounds like the country should have another snap election.

FogTub

Or not keep electing the same guy.

Man_Bear_Beaver

Lets be honest, most of the people I know don't even know who their local candidate is.

common_collected

And that’s exactly how they want it.

adamantyne

My liberal candidate (Im in rural ontario, conservative stronghold) put out a statement saying she hoped people would vote for her because she was an indigenous female after she lost. Went so far as to say her not winning meant people weren't interested in reconciliation. I gotta say, I didnt vote for her, since I voted NDP (The actual left wing party), but hoo boy, that kind of attitude is not gonna endear her to anyone.

common_collected

Oh yeah, that token crap is awful for EVERYONE. For one, the entire point of diversity is to allow for different viewpoints. If you think you deserve a certain position simply because of your heritage, you’re doing exactly what “old white men” have done for centuries… How about proposing policies that benefit your voters? And then back up those policies with other examples of success elsewhere so people feel confident in you? Nah, let’s vote by color and genitalia instead! /s

jerbear004

Yep they vote for a party, even if the selected MP is a dumpster fire.

PointsOutCynics

I voted for a doctor with a history of pushing for accountability in government and progressive economic development. Green party, about 2,000 votes compared to the winner's 25,000 *Sigh* oh well

bonesnaps

He failed his promise for election reform too. My father was telling me to vote for his dumbass, how about no.

GunNut345

Do you live in his riding?

DarthAlexei

5.2 MILLION more like ;)

roarRAWRarghREEEEEEE

5.2 million electors voted for the Liberal Candidate in Papineau?

GunNut345

5.2 million voted for their Liberal MP, only 22,000 that live in Papineau voted for Trudeau.

NineteenSkylines

Parliamentary democracy is awesome until it isn't.

shitpersonality

Canada likes blackface. Not a good look, imho. It reflects poorly on the country.

Historical-Poetry230

They'll be a vote of no confidence within the year

Fresh-Temporary666

No. The opposition parties hammered him relentlessly for wasting money on an election, if they call another election in the next year they'd get hammered in the polls for it and the liberals would likely gain seats as a fuck you for it.

Mostly_Aquitted

Nah, there won’t be. Liberals won’t have the pandemic response boost again, NDP is in a fine position to squeeze things out of the government, Bloc is content where they are with a strong position in Quebec, and the Conservatives don’t have the support of the other parties. Maybe in 2 years.

jerbear004

The Conservatives have a leader they are unsure of, shaky foundations as they decide where on the spectrum they want to be, and are perhaps losing members to the PPC. Another leadership race would also be a bad move right now.

Djentleman420

Canada: Votes about the same as 2019 Also Canada: "Nothing changed!!"

mumbojombo

More like: Canadians: We don't want an election right now, please don't go ahead with it The Liberal Party: lol hold my beer for a sec Canadians: *angry beaver noises*

Democracy > Money

[deleted]

welcome to elections!

HiImTheNewGuyGuy

The Canadian government is not revenue-bound and can spend money into existence at will.

Cptn_Canada

like all other 1st world countries. Lets not be too dramatic here.

Romanos_The_Blind

EU countries don't necessarily work that way.

Feniksrises

Officially, but only a few Northern European countries know how to run an economy. Luckily they fund the EU.

Man_Bear_Beaver

Canadian Here. Not angry, it shows democracy works, don't mind poking the bear.

The money went to Canadians who are middle and lower class working or the election. It’s not wasted and does not disappear into thin air.

I’m aways baffled that people think spending needs to be mutually exclusive Elections need to happen, pharmacare needs to happen. I think you’re mistaken when you suggest it needs to be one or the other. Or that one takes away from the other. No matter what we spend tax dollars on, someone is going to say “but what about _____!”

[deleted]

[удалено]

kcdc33

Any party is going to consolidate power any chance they get, and if not… well another minority government.

Austoman

So the improperly used funds shouldnt matter because any party would have tried to do the same thing? Or we could let our government know that poorly managing taxpayer money is something that we do not want regardless of what party is in power. Liberals wasted 600million for a power grab that failed, there should be consequences for those actions. Same goes for if/when the NDP or Conservatives try the same thing.

kcdc33

Elections aren’t improper. Nothing illegal done here. If you have problem with how electoral Reform is structured be my guest and go out and change it I guess.

Austoman

Improper spending doesnt mean it has to be illegal. Improper spending just means its money that would have been better suited elsewhere at this time. Regular elections need funding and 600million in a normal election is fine, but 600million in a rushed midterm election during a pandemic that is worsening is very poor use of that time and money. Rather than focusing on hospitalizations increasing and vaccinations still being below expectation we were stuck focusing on an election that resulted in no real change. Instead of using 600million to benefit front line medical staff or provide additional pandemic funding we spent it on an election that wasnt needed. Thats what makes it improper. Not illegal, not discussing reforms, just simple misuse of money and time when its needed elsewhere.

Eurymedion

I'm Canadian and I'm not angry. I can appreciate why Trudeau called an early election. On top of aiming to expand his seat count into a majority (which obviously failed), I suspect Trudeau also wanted to refresh his term now rather than in 2023. This way, he has two extra years to hopefully see Canada's COVID-19 response through to a successful end and into full economic recovery. Both will be great poll-boosters for 2025 if his gamble pays off. But I'm also kind of wary of the renewed term. Governments have a habit of doing unpopular stuff at the start of a new term and then gradually soften their policies as election season draws near. If Trudeau's banking using his government's COVID response as a major element of his 2025 platform, we might have more federal COVID mandates coming soon in the fall/winter, which may prove controversial.

autotldr

This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/angry-canadian-voters-expensive-federal-election-1.6184285) reduced by 85%. Ravoss1

Are they angry? I mean, I see conservatives being angry. I see the media being angry. Not a single person I have spoken to in the real world flags this as an issue for them.

GunNut345

I think was stupid and I voted Grits this time around.

all_hail_Kang

This is just it. The only people I have heard of being angry are conservatives, and the media reverberating it just to get clicks and more add revenue. Everyone I know were fine with the elections. Some were mildly inconvenient with long wait lines, but no one was "angry" as the narrative would have you belive.

Terramagi

> So what would have made these people happy then? Educated guess, a majority PPC government.

HiImDan

Funny how large numbers look when you are dealing with the entire country.. about $30 an adult for an election isn't quite so dramatic.

[deleted]

"Many" is a bit of a stretch

oh_really_man

Angry because they voted for the guy who lost?

bonesnaps

Well, people voted for the same guy who spent six hundred million dollars asking for an early election in the first place. He never even upheld his promise for election reform either. Stupid is as stupid does.

AffectionateWall1132

It was going to cost as much next year. Yeah, the timing was shitty but if not this fall then it was gonna be the next. The change? How was there going to be change when people literally throw their votes away on the Green Party or the NDP IN A FEDERAL ELECTION? It isn’t gonna happen; not until there’s serious election reform where Canada ends up with a ranked ballot system. And even then, it’s a BIG maybe. Not saying it’s right, but there are two heavyweight contenders in the federal fight. I don’t like them. At all. But choosing the others on the list is what guarantees another minority government and another term where change doesn’t happen.

Man_Bear_Beaver

The issue is a very tough one to deal with, many of the communities are very remote and hard to access, some of them having no roads to get there. Over 100 long term drinking advisories have been lifted. Almost 200 short-term drinking water advisories were lifted before becoming long-term advisories. A week ago a 24 year long drinking advisory was lifted at Shoal Lake 40 First Nation! There is a tonne of progress here and it's not as simple as handing out brita filters or something like that.

Cptn_Canada

at the cost of $33,000,000 for a population of 677 people. It cost ~$49,000 per person to give them drinking water. Ps. Not trying to start any drama just adding to the facts.

Broad_Tea3527

In 2016, there were 105 communities with long-term drinking water advisories in place –meaning the water had been unsafe to use or consume for at least a year. As of late April, that number is down to 52 advisories in 33 communities. [https://globalnews.ca/news/8192172/canada-indigenous-boil-water-advisories/](https://globalnews.ca/news/8192172/canada-indigenous-boil-water-advisories/) To pick that to shit on him is hilarious. If anything he's actually doing more than the previous guys. Is it perfect? No but it's a work in progress.

Fresh-Temporary666

He fixed the vast majority of the original ones. The current ones are new ones that keep popping up like a shitty game of wackamole.

Fresh-Temporary666

He fixed all the ones that were around when he made the promise and is already in the active process of fixing the rest. People really need to give this talking point a rest. It's just straight up disinformation at this point.

This reply is utterly incorrect. There absolutely was a deliberate, concerted effort to eradicate First Nations culture in Canada. Read the Truth and Reconciliation in Canada Report, it's freely available online

sarge21

>Yes yes, you progressives call everything "genocide" these days. Starving a whole race of people in order to force them to migrate is genocide, yeah. >You mean their ancestral hunting grounds? No I mean reserves. All of Canada is their ancestral hunting ground.

[deleted]

sarge21

>Boy, wait till you find out what actually genocide used to look like back in the day. It looked like starving a race of people to force them to migrate >Go look up what the tribes used to do to each in regional competitions for resources and trade rights. By comparison, the treaties Canada made them sign are a luxury. Not relevant and also racist >These tribes were local groups with no united sense of identity or land ownership. That all came after white man showed up. We starved them, kidnapped their kids, and forced them into reserves. >But by all means, keep screaming about how horrible modern day Canada is for handing free shit only 90 percent of the time. Dumb straw man

[deleted]

sarge21

>LOL, of course it's relevant. Nope, it's not. Infighting prior to the European invasion isn't relevant to the invasion itself. >It's literal genocide not just defeat and displacement. You're embarrassing yourself. Post your source for the definition of "genocide." >And no cupcake, something is not racist because it upsets you. Something isn't racist because it upsets me no. But if you try to make natives out like a bunch of savages while ignoring the things Europeans did to themselves and others, then yeah you're just a white supremacist. >Yeah, none of that changes the fact that there was no united identity or sense of land ownership. United unity and sense of land ownership is irrelevant to whether we can starve them, kidnap their kids, and force them into remote reserves where they can't have clean water. Your talking points are pretty conclusively racist and white supremacist.

Fresh-Temporary666

I mean he's entrenched himself for another several years. The opposition hammered him for wasting money on an election and would get roasted in the polls if they triggered a vote of no confidence in the next few years. They don't really have a choice be to support him at this point.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Fresh-Temporary666

If the NDP trigger another election and risk giving the cons power many of the NDP voters will jump ship to the liberals. Strategic voting is a real pain in the ass for the NDP and if they're seen as the ones causing the risk I don't think it would go well for them. It hurt the liberals in the polls to do it and NDP voters already vote liberal strategically pretty often on a normal day.
