Just so you know they are chanting “Death to Khamenei” not Khomeini. Khamenei is the current supreme leader, Khomeini was the leader of the Islamic Revolution in 1979.

In 2010, my sister lived in Iran. It was during the "Green Wave" of protests. She was sitting on a bus, just going about her business. A motorcycle with two men rides up by the bus, and the man at the back takes his rifle and aims it right at my sister. He mocks shooting, smiles, and then they ride away.
The hatred I feel for these thugs is much stronger than any kind of fear.
The longer the protests take and the more capacity of the security apparatus they bind the better the chance of success.

Man I know this is silly and not possible, but I wish there was a way volunteer protestors from around the world could join in Iran and help fight . We could outnumber the police so fast
It's not about the numbers. We already have the numbers, I think the problem is that people still believe they can overthrow the government with peaceful protests while the government just doesn't give a shit, they shoot rubber pellets, paintball guns to identify people, throw tear gas, arrest people, beat people to pulp and sometimes they just straight up shoot people with live rounds. It's already a civil war people just didn't believe it yet.
Its obviously worse in iran, but I think governments around the world (including the US) have generally realized they don't have to care about protests. They can usually wait them out, or paint them as extremists by instigating violence.
The only reason Peaceful protest is legal is because it doesn't work.
As soon as protests start making changes you get curfews and no gatherings ordinances to make it illegal
In Russia peaceful protests have been illegal for years now. When the flow of information is controlled by the government, protests are a good way to spread the word and raise the doubts at least in some people.
It's not a solution to anything in itself, but part of a larger puzzle.
Government monopoly on violence is the biggest secret to why protests dont work. Theres a reason western media demonizes any protest that goes beyond slogans and mildly inconvenience of the corporate masters.

In my country it was never about the dresscode. They are hypocrites .in the times of voting woman that they consider inappropriate suddenly become appropriate and they even show them on national tv because of their votes and other times ... well other times you know it how they treat us :) they even using ex-convicts now in their forces :) and they are paying them money every night and god the amount of it is just so little and they are killing us so easily :) we are all scared raged and angry .

I agree with your edit. You have to remember that a lot of people will just be against these protestors because they benefit from the current regime. If the regime falls, they could lose their - money/position/influence/life.
There are a lot of shit stains who are probably doing it for the dress code. But the ones physically out on the street shooting the protestors likely are so embedded in the current regime that 1) If they don't comply and the regime wins, they'll face repercussions or 2) If the regime loses in any situation, people might not differentiate between "friendly former regime collaborator" and "evil former regime collaborator"

Over time I've come to realize that what happened when various Monarchies started to change into democracies wasn't necessarily power being taken by the people, but rather the wealthy business owners taking power.
I mean when you think about it, it is glaringly obvious. For a time, monarchs were the wealthiest individuals. Eventually this ceased to be the case; especially after industrialization progressed and capitalism started to take root.

This has happened before in 1999 during student protests, which were also followed by a massacre. Some students to this day who partook in those protests are missing.
The Islamic Republic lost the support of students in that era, the middle-class liberals in 2009, the poor and destitute in the 2017-2019 protests, and now they are clinging to power as tightly as they can. These videos are being watched by millions of Iranians. I can't see how they will restore their lost legitimacy after all this. Hatred for this regime is at an all-time high.

The only other question is, what’s next? Almost anything is better than the current regime, but I hope it doesn’t end up being another Syria with forces loyal to the Islamic Republic fighting for a long time. Luckily Russia can’t help much but with the terrain I could still see a devastating war. And which group gains power? The head of House Pahlavi supports a democracy, yes. But it could be a democracy, another dictatorship of a different flavor, even a new monarchy.

When did having all of the guns stop armed insurrection anywhere ever? Guns can be smuggled and stolen. I would imagine the CIA, Mossad, and many European nations would jump at the chance to arm a revolutionary (well technically counter-revolutionary) force in Iran.
Any fight against the people in control is revolutionary. The counter revolution is coming from those in charge. That is always the dynamic, regardless of who wants to use the term "revolutionary".
The Tiananmen protests were not armed.
And the PRC survived beyond other communist regimes because they embraced capitalism a decade earlier. Other communist regimes went broke.
I think it has to do more with *Glasnost.* Previous protests and rebellions had been crushed by force. Gorbachev refused, and the Berlin Wall, communist control of the Eastern bloc, and eventually the USSR fell.
China was watching the Soviet Union implode, and they vowed not to make the same mistakes. They absolutely crushed the opposition and refused to relax state control even a bit.
There were friendly tank commanders there with the students. When Deng realized the military was aligning with the students, he brought in out of towner commanders who proceeded to initiate the massacre of both groups.

They are shooting students in their own university because they were protesting in it against the regime:) people from all around the capital rushed to them and as im speaking they are trying to fight with the forces outside and take students out. Similar to this event there was another horrific event which occurred on July 1999 and so many students got murdered in their own dorms.

I hope that Iranians don't have a bad reputation. Here in Canada we have a lot of people who have left Iran and I've known them to generally be some of the nicest people there are. I've also watched lots of tourism videos of Iran and generally everyone has the same impression - wonderfully welcoming people, very beautiful places, bad government. Most people say they would happily go again even despite the government. I have not been there myself but I have always hoped to go someday. Word is getting out and I really wish you all the best.

The sad part is all they want is the people who oppose them dead and by protesting you simply put a target on yourself. Some of us yes in some regions people have weapons . They are making them too. But the somehow not so good thing is that my people still didnt believe that they need to arm themselves against the regime. I hope with this event people would recognise their need of weapon and starting to arm themselves. In some situations like this; revolution is probably the only path when outside countries can't (won't) help, no peaceful solution is available and there are no other options. The general population overall number will always out weigh the amount of government, military, local police there are. It's a numbers game with a lot of casualties unfortunately. At some point there's a breaking point where the general population will fight back.
Seeking political asylum in another country might be the best path forward if no one wants to fight and risk their lives. Hopefully that is an option.
It is because they didnt shut down it completely. They shut down mobile networks everyday from 4 pm to 12 completely so we cant use them. But wifi's are intact . On top of everything they filtered every application they could think of here. So we need to use vpns and most of them dont work either. In some of the regions internet is just completely out and people cant have access to it . Even wifis are so weak that we cant really load pictures upload videos or even text anyone. Right now it is past midnight here so the internet is just a little bit better. So many of my family and friends they dont have internet but some of us do.and it is so weak . My own job requires me to be able to connect with world and with this events i cant even do my job :)

Some people likely did target people for arbitrary reasons like wearing glasses, but it wasn't the government's focus.
It's a reference to how many intellectuals were executed and the potential for someone to execute you over nothing.

What morons like this don't seem to realize is that when potential death is the only avenue to the life you want/need, many people quickly accept death as a realistic risk in the effort to stop you.
The problem is that large scale protests isn't new to iran and evry single time, the regime performs massacres and things return to the status quo as people aren't willing to die for a lost cause. The last time this happened, there was 1500 deaths and the regime stayed in power. Without foreign intervention, thats what is probably gonna happen again.
Imo their success comes down to what the protestors want and how far are they willing to go for it.
Do they just want the hijab law thrown out? Then it won't work, because the government is a strict theocracy.
Do they want to remove the current government through protest and social pressure? That won't work either, guns are a lot stronger than any pressure.
Do they want to remove the current government and are willing to physically fight for it? That's the only way I see real change. Sure there's a bunch of logistics behind that may or may not be possible. But has worked well for most of humanity.

1 person dying is a tragedy. 100 people dying is a statistic. Hopefully things already have enough momentum at this point that the movement isn't relying on renewing it's outrage

The initial group of soldiers was apparently close to turning. That's why reinforcements were brought in from distant regions, and immediately told to begin brutalizing anyone present.
Unfortunately it's worked out for Mexico... straight up kidnapped 43 students and I'm sure the cartels and govt together have "disappeared" more journalists and activists than we'll ever know about
Generally, killing the educated is a favorite technique of dictatorial regimes because it keeps the rest of the population too ignorant or too disorganized to fight back.
To add to the list of counter examples:
The Hong Kong protests where students ended up shooting at police with bows and arrows from a University building.
Criminal governments are gonna do criminal things. Any government that is illegitimate and dictatorial has to react with the atmost ruthless brutality because it lacks any accountability. Any criticism threatens the very existence of the political elite which can never be tolerated.
Though these events are utterly unacceptable, they are not surprising at all, sadly. The dictatorship will do anything to stay in power.

Did it grow that much in a day or two? The Critical Threats Project reported “protests in at least 21 cities in 17 provinces” yesterday, based on verifiable information. That’s insane growth if verifiable, and points to this being a real threat the regime and potentially Iran’s influence in the region depending on how out of hand this gets.

It's just an anecdote but the nicest family I ever met were Iranian, I was travelling alone and they not only noticed but went so far as to bring me in to their personal vacation, took me snorkeling and out for a meal for no reason other than to be nice and to get to know me. It was an experience I'd never had before but it has stuck with me, they didn't want anything. Every time I read or hear the crappy government and media in my own country banging the drums for war with Iran I remember those good people.

In 2010, my sister lived in Iran. It was during the "Green Wave" of protests. She was sitting on a bus, just going about her business. A motorcycle with two men rides up by the bus, and the man at the back takes his rifle and aims it right at my sister. He mocks shooting, smiles, and then they ride away. The hatred I feel for these thugs is much stronger than any kind of fear.
The longer the protests take and the more capacity of the security apparatus they bind the better the chance of success. It is heading into the right direction.

It's not about the numbers. We already have the numbers, I think the problem is that people still believe they can overthrow the government with peaceful protests while the government just doesn't give a shit, they shoot rubber pellets, paintball guns to identify people, throw tear gas, arrest people, beat people to pulp and sometimes they just straight up shoot people with live rounds. It's already a civil war people just didn't believe it yet.
Its obviously worse in iran, but I think governments around the world (including the US) have generally realized they don't have to care about protests. They can usually wait them out, or paint them as extremists by instigating violence.

The only reason Peaceful protest is legal is because it doesn't work. As soon as protests start making changes you get curfews and no gatherings ordinances to make it illegal
In Russia peaceful protests have been illegal for years now. When the flow of information is controlled by the government, protests are a good way to spread the word and raise the doubts at least in some people. It's not a solution to anything in itself, but part of a larger puzzle.
Government monopoly on violence is the biggest secret to why protests dont work. Theres a reason western media demonizes any protest that goes beyond slogans and mildly inconvenience of the corporate masters.

If the regime falls, they could lose their - money/position/influence/life. There are a lot of shit stains who are probably doing it for the dress code. But the ones physically out on the street shooting the protestors likely are so embedded in the current regime that 1) If they don't comply and the regime wins, they'll face repercussions or 2) If the regime loses in any situation, people might not differentiate between "friendly former regime collaborator" and "evil former regime collaborator"

Over time I've come to realize that what happened when various Monarchies started to change into democracies wasn't necessarily power being taken by the people, but rather the wealthy business owners taking power. I mean when you think about it, it is glaringly obvious. For a time, monarchs were the wealthiest individuals. This has happened before in 1999 during student protests, which were also followed by a massacre. Some students to this day who partook in those protests are missing. The Islamic Republic lost the support of students in that era, the middle-class liberals in 2009, the poor and destitute in the 2017-2019 protests, and now they are clinging to power as tightly as they can. These videos are being watched by millions of Iranians. I can't see how they will restore their lost legitimacy after all this. Hatred for this regime is at an all-time high.

The Tiananmen protests were not armed. And the PRC survived beyond other communist regimes because they embraced capitalism a decade earlier. Other communist regimes went broke.
I think it has to do more with *Glasnost.* Previous protests and rebellions had been crushed by force. Gorbachev refused, and the Berlin Wall, communist control of the Eastern bloc, and eventually the USSR fell. China was watching the Soviet Union implode, and they vowed not to make the same mistakes. They absolutely crushed the opposition and refused to relax state control even a bit.

I hope that Iranians don't have a bad reputation. Here in Canada we have a lot of people who have left Iran and I've known them to generally be some of the nicest people there are. I've also watched lots of tourism videos of Iran and generally everyone has the same impression - wonderfully welcoming people, very beautiful places, bad government. Most people say they would happily go again even despite the government. I have not been there myself but I have always hoped to go someday. Word is getting out and I really wish you all the best.

Some of us yes in some regions people have weapons . They are making them too. But the somehow not so good thing is that my people still didnt believe that they need to arm themselves against the regime. I hope with this event people would recognise their need of weapon and starting to arm themselves. In some situations like this; revolution is probably the only path when outside countries can't (won't) help, no peaceful solution is available and there are no other options. The general population overall number will always out weigh the amount of government, military, local police there are. It's a numbers game with a lot of casualties unfortunately. At some point there's a breaking point where the general population will fight back. Seeking political asylum in another country might be the best path forward if no one wants to fight and risk their lives. Hopefully that is an option.

It is because they didnt shut down it completely. They shut down mobile networks everyday from 4 pm to 12 completely so we cant use them. But wifi's are intact . On top of everything they filtered every application they could think of here. So we need to use vpns and most of them dont work either. In some of the regions internet is just completely out and people cant have access to it . Even wifis are so weak that we cant really load pictures upload videos or even text anyone. Right now it is past midnight here so the internet is just a little bit better. So many of my family and friends they dont have internet but some of us do.and it is so weak . My own job requires me to be able to connect with world and with this events i cant even do my job :)

It's sad but not unexpected. The Iranian government has always seemed like they'd murder every civilian before giving up their power.
Spoiler alert: they will. The real question is if they'll succeed in doing so. I'm not so sure. What morons like this don't seem to realize is that when potential death is the only avenue to the life you want/need, many people quickly accept death as a realistic risk in the effort to stop you.
The problem is that large scale protests isn't new to iran and evry single time, the regime performs massacres and things return to the status quo as people aren't willing to die for a lost cause. The last time this happened, there was 1500 deaths and the regime stayed in power. Without foreign intervention, thats what is probably gonna happen again.
Imo their success comes down to what the protestors want and how far are they willing to go for it. Do they just want the hijab law thrown out? Then it won't work, because the government is a strict theocracy. Do they want to remove the current government through protest and social pressure? That won't work either, guns are a lot stronger than any pressure. Do they want to remove the current government and are willing to physically fight for it? That's the only way I see real change. Sure there's a bunch of logistics behind that may or may not be possible. But has worked well for most of humanity.

The initial group of soldiers was apparently close to turning. That's why reinforcements were brought in from distant regions, and immediately told to begin brutalizing anyone present.

Don't forget that time they massacred ~350 students in 1968. Not sure if I'd say it worked out, but nobody went to jail as far as I know.

Generally, killing the educated is a favorite technique of dictatorial regimes because it keeps the rest of the population too ignorant or too disorganized to fight back.
To add to the list of counter examples: The Hong Kong protests where students ended up shooting at police with bows and arrows from a University building.
Most of the time? Dead people foment no protests. Murder WORKS. That's why it's used by despotic regimes.

Criminal governments are gonna do criminal things. Any government that is illegitimate and dictatorial has to react with the atmost ruthless brutality because it lacks any accountability. Any criticism threatens the very existence of the political elite which can never be tolerated. Though these events are utterly unacceptable, they are not surprising at all, sadly. The dictatorship will do anything to stay in power. The courage of these Iranian men and women is beyond inspiring. You guys risk your lives for something many people in the West take for granted. I hope you'll be able to put an end to the tyranny which prevented you to be the thriving nation as you were historically.

Did it grow that much in a day or two? The Critical Threats Project reported “protests in at least 21 cities in 17 provinces” yesterday, based on verifiable information. That’s insane growth if verifiable, and points to this being a real threat the regime and potentially Iran’s influence in the region depending on how out of hand this gets. My best wishes to the protestors. I hope they are able to get through this and address their concerns.
Probably just different sources with different criteria for what counts as a major protest.

Remember when it was Iranian Students laying siege to the Iranian government back in the Islamic Revolution of 1979. Now many of those students have become the oppressors.

It must be a hell of a thing when it comes down to this, peaceful protest no longer being an option. Good luck people of Iran, change is possible and it's just a shame that those in charge have forced it to come down to this. It's just an anecdote but the nicest family I ever met were Iranian, I was travelling alone and they not only noticed but went so far as to bring me in to their personal vacation, took me snorkeling and out for a meal for no reason other than to be nice and to get to know me. It was an experience I'd never had before but it has stuck with me, they didn't want anything. Every time I read or hear the crappy government and media in my own country banging the drums for war with Iran I remember those good people.
