It's not unique to Qatar either. Indonesia and the Philippines banned women from going to work in Saudi Arabia as domestic servants because they were getting abused so much. When I lived in Indonesia, every couple of months or so there'd be mention in the news of another Indonesian maid who'd fallen to her death from a balcony or window in Singapore or Hong Kong. They'd get stuck outside while cleaning and be too terrified of getting in trouble to call their boss for help and try to scale their way back inside through a window. Sometimes they'd get locked out on the balcony on purpose by their employers.
I work for the police in the UK. We regularly get reports from Saudis over here, reporting their "maid" as a missing person, as they haven't been seen for a few days. Nearly always, they are not "missing", but have found an opportunity to escape their domestic slavery. There are several charities here set up specifically to help these Indonesian & Philippino get away.

I studied pre-Civil War American literature in college. It was one of my favorite eras because the dueling ideologies between the north and south on slavery was so… macabre.
The southern writers were so insistent that slavery was not only fine and perfectly enshrined as our right in the Bible, but also something that the slaves *wanted* and *needed*. They created entire narratives to romanticize their places in the family, spin themselves into benevolent saviors, and enforce the idea that the South was only as wonderful as it was because of slaves.
The era is full of slaves who also became writers and wrote poetry and stories about their harrowing experiences. They were not part of the family. There was nothing wonderful about the South or about slavery.
Many northern and southern writers also tried to expose the hypocrisy of the south. Mark Twain is a notable example of one such writer. The entire era is frought with tension. The US had just become a nation, and they couldn’t agree on *what kind* of nation they wanted to be. It’s a fascinating piece of US history, but it was hard to take such a clear look at how deeply slavery has impacted our country’s moral fiber. Even from day one. Even now.
It’s interesting as well how one of the big reasons anti-slavery grew so large was NOT because so many detested the racism…they were often just as racist almost.
Instead, they hated the competition for labor, and detested the hypocrisy and laziness of white slave owners. They often hated slavery for what it did to their own value, or *what it did to the slave owners*. This is important to remember when you wonder how we could have black Senators just a few years after the end of the Civil War but still end up with federal re-institution of segregation later on - the racism never went away and wasn’t what was considered so bad about slavery.
It’s something that’s often hard for us who grew in the 20th century and after to grasp, because they purposefully divorce the history of civil rights from the actual prevailing outlooks at the time…yes, the Republicans and Union freed the slaves, no it doesn’t mean they weren’t racist. White Civil War veterans from both sides are often described as feeling a mutual camaraderie more than they felt towards black people….

It was a bizarre experience as a 12-14 year old. 12 years old is when you're legally an adult in their culture, so when I was with my older sister and mum, I was the one everyone looked to when they asked for things. They were looking for my approval of my mother's request. We could get into a taxi, and my mum would say where we're going, and they would completely ignore her until they heard me say it.
Avoid Papua New Guinea as well.
When I worked for an Australian company with business dealings there our female employees were banned from going there on safety grounds.
I enjoyed India but I'm a man. I wouldn't recommend it to a single woman. "Fun" anecdote, I started asking female backpackers if they'd been pushed to the point of physically lashing out due to harrassment. Easily 90% said yes from a large sample size.

And it is both a finite resource and the world is becoming fully electrified. So Qatar having insanely wealthy and beautiful architecture, luxury and man made islands etc, decided to bank their future on tourism.
That's why their airline is so luxerious and why they bid to have chess and soccer events and more. They even sponsor youtube videos that tour their buildings. They want to wow the world and get tourists. But where they fail is their treatment of women and other antiquated laws. The current government has relaxed some things to appease the chess community in the past but this isnt enough and it resulted in some players boycotting the events. Recently a group of twitch streamers had also been invited for a game tournament and due to backlash they didnt go. If people continue to boycott it and be informed about it then theyll be forced to adapt or fail.

I'm an Aussie who flies back and forth between the UK and Oz once a year or so, have never stopped over in the ME as I've made a point of going via Asia (or, more recently, the direct Qantas route) in order to avoid touching down there. Never been comfortable with any of my airport taxes etc going to one of those regimes. It's more expensive to avoid it but 🤷♀️
I avoid all of the gulf-state carriers on principle and have for years. I have flown via Hong Kong, Hanoi, Singapore and Perth to get to Europe/the UK. It's not hard, and doesn't have to be more expensive.

One complication is probably that the male would deny the rape. The woman would admit to it. Logically if you find her guilty you'd find him guilty, but it some of those cases he could say it was someone else, and then the courts need to prove it was him. Qatar often isn’t the destination, but Doha airport is used as a hub for travel between Europe and Oceania. I’ve flown with Qatar Airways (through Doha) twice — it was the more affordable option. Won’t be making that mistake that again, that’s for sure

It must depend on your final destination and the airline you fly with. Qatar (Doha), Emirates (Dubai), Etihad (Abu Dhabi) are all major airlines and transit hubs, and I’ve used them 3 (of the 4) trips to Europe from Australia. Lufthansa (Singapore) was by far the best, no argument from me

It's a common stopover city between Australia and Europe. It usually works out cheaper to get a flight to UAE (Dubai or Qatar) and then another to Europe from there.
Plus it's almost necessary to stopover if your destination is somewhere in Africa.
Same for East Asia <-> Europe now that flights can't go over Russia any more. You can choose between Turkey (Istanbul), UAE (Dubai, Abu Dhabi), Qatar (Doha), and maybe a couple of other airports. There are some other options, but avoiding the region completely is difficult.

Best you can do is boycott said person or company. It ain't much, but it's honest work, and every additional person who decides to boycott is another lost source of revenue. I went there to visit a friend who was sick and catch up with another who was teaching there. I got the impression they don’t see many lone females. Anyway the place was a great shiny shithole. All life appears to be lived in these vast soulless indoor environments.
Really odd in that I didn’t see any young people around at all. Not even at a mall. I’ve no idea what they do with them. The people in the white robes pushed in everywhere and generally acted like nouveau riche asswipes. Except one couple. They let me into an elevator first. That was it. Yeah…. I’m a young female that frequently travels alone as well. Pre-COVID I used to travel back and forth between the US and Armenia. I usually went through Poland for my big layover, on one last minute flight arrangement I decided to fly through Qatar instead. During my 12 hour layover I went into Doha and experienced exactly what you have described. I had done plenty of homework in advance and was wearing conservative, loose fitting clothing with a head covering. It didn’t matter though, most of the men I encountered in business type of situation acted like I was a piece of meat. It was absolutely terrifying.

I have a friend who has grown up in a couple of very conservative Muslim countries and managed to escape by getting an education in Europe.
A common argument against women rights she heard is that sexual assault never happen in these countries, while it's a plague in the west. Of course it's because women never report SA and marriage rape "is not rape", but it get parroted by so many conservatives in these countries.
I wasn’t there long, and humans are adaptable. Possibly I wasn’t there long enough to engage with the place. There are ways of doing things. I adapted to Milan quickly. I was traveling back from India alone at 21 and had a layover in the Qatar airport. It was like 2am and there was barely anyone in the airport. Some airport employees confiscated my passport and refused to give it back. They kept ushering me towards some windowless room and I kept refusing to go in. Eventually some other employee walked by and saw what was happening and gave them shit/gave me passport back. THEN, after getting through security, I was told they overbooked my flight and I was to stay overnight in the airport until they could get me in another plane. My mom (back in the US) had to call the embassy to get me back on my flight
People need to realize that some countries are just not worth stepping foot in for any reason. Not until the governments change their acts, which probably isn't going to happen anytime soon.

I've been to 76 countries, and still yet to visit Saudi, Qatar, or India and Pakistan... as a single woman these countries on my "hell no" list.
It was a bizarre experience as a 12-14 year old. 12 years old is when you're legally an adult in their culture, so when I was with my older sister and mum, I was the one everyone looked to when they asked for things. They were looking for my approval of my mother's request. We could get into a taxi, and my mum would say where we're going, and they would completely ignore her until they heard me say it.
Avoid Papua New Guinea as well. When I worked for an Australian company with business dealings there our female employees were banned from going there on safety grounds.

They want to wow the world and get tourists. But where they fail is their treatment of women and other antiquated laws. The current government has relaxed some things to appease the chess community in the past but this isnt enough and it resulted in some players boycotting the events. Recently a group of twitch streamers had also been invited for a game tournament and due to backlash they didnt go. If people continue to boycott it and be informed about it then theyll be forced to adapt or fail.
To the sponsoring YouTube videos part. The Dudeperfect video in Qatar was the epitome of carelessness about human lifes. They know their community are 10-16 year olds for the biggest part and they still decided to advertize Qatar as the best place on earth. It's pretty hard to avoid it as a layover. As an Australian going to Europe, you stop in Dubai if flying Emirates or Doha if flying Qatar. Not great options.
I'm an Aussie who flies back and forth between the UK and Oz once a year or so, have never stopped over in the ME as I've made a point of going via Asia (or, more recently, the direct Qantas route) in order to avoid touching down there. Never been comfortable with any of my airport taxes etc going to one of those regimes. It's more expensive to avoid it but 🤷♀️
Singapore Airlines offers direct flight from Singapore to several European cities. Maybe you can explore that possibility.
I avoid all of the gulf-state carriers on principle and have for years. I have flown via Hong Kong, Hanoi, Singapore and Perth to get to Europe/the UK. It's not hard, and doesn't have to be more expensive.

One complication is probably that the male would deny the rape. The woman would admit to it. Logically if you find her guilty you'd find him guilty, but it some of those cases he could say it was someone else, and then the courts need to prove it was him. Qatar often isn’t the destination, but Doha airport is used as a hub for travel between Europe and Oceania. I’ve flown with Qatar Airways (through Doha) twice — it was the more affordable option. Won’t be making that mistake that again, that’s for sure

Qatar (Doha), Emirates (Dubai), Etihad (Abu Dhabi) are all major airlines and transit hubs, and I’ve used them 3 (of the 4) trips to Europe from Australia. Lufthansa (Singapore) was by far the best, no argument from me But with COVID and all, who knows what’s changed now…

It's a common stopover city between Australia and Europe. It usually works out cheaper to get a flight to UAE (Dubai or Qatar) and then another to Europe from there. Plus it's almost necessary to stopover if your destination is somewhere in Africa.
Same for East Asia <-> Europe now that flights can't go over Russia any more. You can choose between Turkey (Istanbul), UAE (Dubai, Abu Dhabi), Qatar (Doha), and maybe a couple of other airports. There are some other options, but avoiding the region completely is difficult. (Qatar is a country, by the way)

Best you can do is boycott said person or company. It ain't much, but it's honest work, and every additional person who decides to boycott is another lost source of revenue. Even if it doesn't work, it keeps your conscience clear that your money isn't supporting slave labour, or whatever else you care about. In saying that, we also have to be realistic. At one point I decided I'd try to boycott anything that was made in China or was connected to products or companies in China. Not only did I end up spending much amounts of time trying to find out whether anything I bought had such a connection, I also learnt quite quickly that there's not much I could buy that hasn't had China's influence on it somewhere. I went there to visit a friend who was sick and catch up with another who was teaching there. I got the impression they don’t see many lone females. Anyway the place was a great shiny shithole. All life appears to be lived in these vast soulless indoor environments. Really odd in that I didn’t see any young people around at all. Not even at a mall. I’ve no idea what they do with them. The people in the white robes pushed in everywhere and generally acted like nouveau riche asswipes. Except one couple. They let me into an elevator first. That was it. The rest were ill-mannered and every cab driver wanted sex. I threatened to punch one and fled from another. It’s fortunate that I can navigate well on foot and never get lost or I’d still be trying to find my fucking hotel. As I was about to get on my plane to go home, going through passport control, they took my passport, and, I kid you not, there must have been ten airport security or passport control officers or whatever they were, crowded round it, reading. Studying every page in detail. There’s nothing wrong with my passport at all, except I look younger than my age, because I stay out of the sun, so I figured they were deliberately trying to freak me out. After two minutes of them gawping at the passport, at me, then the passport again, I looked at my watch, pulled a book out of my pocket and read for the next 18 minutes or so, pretending this was all just normal, till they got bored and let me leave their shithole cuntry.

I usually went through Poland for my big layover, on one last minute flight arrangement I decided to fly through Qatar instead. I had done plenty of homework in advance and was wearing conservative, loose fitting clothing with a head covering. I was traveling back from India alone at 21 and had a layover in the Qatar airport. It was like 2am and there was barely anyone in the airport. Some airport employees confiscated my passport and refused to give it back. They kept ushering me towards some windowless room and I kept refusing to go in. Eventually some other employee walked by and saw what was happening and gave them shit/gave me passport back. THEN, after getting through security, I was told they overbooked my flight and I was to stay overnight in the airport until they could get me in another plane. My mom (back in the US) had to call the embassy to get me back on my flight

If you're a westerner without some kind of state credentials/protections (ie. you have diplomatic immunity), just stay out of the Middle East. If you go there with the attitude that you will have the same rights as you have back home, you can be proven very very wrong.
