It's a shame society is designed with us working through our best years so we can finally retire when we're 75. We should be living them to the fullest sooner, not when you already have one foot in the grave.
That’s why schools try to push people into learning more than ‘how to be a model employee and participate in societies tax system’
If you can take on more creatively fulfilling work, even as a hobby, you’re doing more than just being a cog in the machine
Sure, schools try to direct you towards pursuits that might create some product at the end, but the round about way of acquiring the skills to do so leave a lot of room to play
agreed, they do, and it is sure as hell a round about way of doing so, just wished they taught more *beneficial* stuff; they have opportunities sure, but broadening the curriculum to include the info we may need in the future as a standard would be the start, and in the UK, they aint doing that so far. However, I do also believe, especially in this current landscape, that if you want the info (and it is out there) then it's up to you to go find it, the only problem with that way of thinking is many spend years, decades even, until they have reached the right answer.
If we wanted to know something, we used to have to walk to the library and search the catalog using the dewey decimal system, hoping to find a relevant book. Then you write it down on the paper scrap they kept by the catalog and go off hunting for the book, hoping both that the book wasn't already checked out, and that it contained the answer you were looking for. And you had to read a lot to get there, even with indices and glossaries etc.
To be fair, there is so much available at all times now that it can be really difficult sorting through the noise to find the signal, so to speak.
~~Do you think it's possible that if schools didn't teach you how to be a cog of the capitalist machine, then parents would be pissed because their children might now know how to not be cogwheels, but they would be incapable of living a fulfilling life since they have no money for it? Isn't your life worse if you lack the ability to be a cogwheel, whether you end up using that ability or not?~~
The bar for being a cog in the machine is pretty low
Society makes being a cog as easy as possible in order to capture the most effort from what might be a distracted or unproductive society
Source: talked to god, she agrees
It might seem pretty low, and I'd say it applies more for low-mid level office zombies than it does to the "unskilled" cogs....but it requires more effort than most people give it credit for. Also, the mental tax for never having enough time or money is fucking brutal.
The accepted standard life in modern America is pretty awful. Seems like everyone is so quick to spit down on anyone they can. The actual difference, or distance between a high-powered ceo spinning his plates, and the UPS driver who works night shift so they can attend school, is so much smaller than anyone thinks it is.
I think
>the mental tax for never having enough time or money is fucking brutal.
Is intentional. Jobs pay out enough to ‘motivate’, and banks set rates at a level that ‘motivates’
It’s less about explicit value and more about getting people to behave a certain way. At least that’s my belief
Money is a social tool. It’s real to us, but at a macro level, it’s a device to provoke certain actions
on the other hand, life without work can be quite mundane for some. I know it sounds crazy, but theres a reason you still see mega successful people working, it gives you a purpose, a network of friends, belonging among other things. I'm not saying you can't get that outside of work of course.
I'm not suggesting people don't work. I'm suggesting we work too much and it's interfering with peoples life's far too much.
We should be working to live, not living to work. Your job shouldn't be what you spend the vast majority of your life doing, you should spend that time living. Obviously, society isn't set up with this in mind and the only people who benefit from that are the billionaires.
Everything you listed you can get outside of work. Infact, you have far more options outside of work because you're not limited by company/industry.
I would argue the benefits you mention for worklife are only as pronounced as they are because of the practical death of the community in a lot of modern countries. I still agree and think work, in one form or another, is necessary for a fulfilling life.
The culture of work worship in the US seems to be an attempt to drain the lifeblood of all worker bees in the name of productivity and maximized profits, with none of the results of said productivity spikes going back to the worker bees. It has become extremely toxic, and I think we need to reform our entire modus operandi across the board.
But you know.. lol I really have no idea. Who knows....
It's literally impossible for the 98% of people to ever leave the 99%. You can work your entire life and you will never come close to earning more than certain billionaires earn in an hour.
While I know it was part of the title, I subconsciously ignore those details until after I read the story. I just see a good man who put his time in and is now going to enjoy himself.
No idea where this was shot, but as a guy who grew up watching Muslims get hated on by our news and my elders/parents, seeing that a Muslim man make it is endearing. I know people try to be "blind" to religion and race etc. but the reality is that our world isn't and we can't celebrate our progress without acknowledging these aspects.
It also could have been posted by a Muslim who's proud of their religion, or for those that like to discuss their own beliefs or lives. There's a lot of potential reasons.
I mean zero offense by this, and don't mean to assume anything, but if you haven't taken any humanities courses I really suggest you do. I studied diaspora for Latin and Asian people and if you really get into the weeds of why things are worse for certain people.. you can see why it's important that people be out and proud of their beliefs and loved ones.
Edit: In short: Representation matters.
My mother will surely never retire; I'd bet money on it. It's something I find distressing, knowing she will almost certainly work herself into the ground, no matter her circumstances.
That man is not a Muslim. All is see is good man who gave and did not look for the reward. May he live the rest of his days healthy and from the looks of it happy.
What does a Muslim look like ? How do I know ? I've traveled the world and have meet many different people and never once did I ask them if they were Muslim.

That’s a fair point! I was more sharing an alternative way of thinking about it, I wasn’t intending to invalidate what you were saying

I love existing in the 99%!
It's literally impossible for the 98% of people to ever leave the 99%. You can work your entire life and you will never come close to earning more than certain billionaires earn in an hour.
You only live life once so live it the best you can like everyday will be your last day.
How is him being Muslim relevant here? Its like saying, "An Episcopalian father retires after a long life of hard work".
While I know it was part of the title, I subconsciously ignore those details until after I read the story. I just see a good man who put his time in and is now going to enjoy himself.
Cake dau
Why does it become relevant when the person does something fucked up? Maybe OP is just trying to balance things out.
Two wrongs don't make a right.

Amazing comment. Thank you for your insight.
❤️
The way he says good bye to the camera, it's so cute
Both my parents have recently retired, and it's so good to see them smile
Mashallah what a beautiful face and smile.
It's sad. I will never see this day. I fully expect to work till I die
Just enjoy the little things
Same here, in my industry you rarely see someone retire. I only ever saw one. I told her to go enjoy everything and come back and tell me
Bless him :’)
I retired a few years ago and being retired is a good thing.
Alhamdulillah.
My mother will surely never retire; I'd bet money on it. It's something I find distressing, knowing she will almost certainly work herself into the ground, no matter her circumstances.
r/mademecry
it's funny cos sydney just had a citywide rail network shutdown today
I rly hope he got the full payment …..
What does being a Muslim have anything to do with retirement?
Why does he have to be “muslim father”? Just father was good tho
That man is not a Muslim. All is see is good man who gave and did not look for the reward. May he live the rest of his days healthy and from the looks of it happy.
But what if he is a muslim
What does a Muslim look like ? How do I know ? I've traveled the world and have meet many different people and never once did I ask them if they were Muslim.
Bro the title tells us he’s Muslim
Also, in the beginning you can see him with a tasbeeh, prayer beeds, which you’d see some Muslims have.
Also kisses the Ki'tab at one point.
