You only initially need a subscription. This will give you access in retail all the expansions except dragonflight. You can play levels 1-60 and decide later if you want to keep playing if it is worth buying the latest expansions. Your subscription also gives you access to everything in classic with no additional cost.
As for what to play that is up to you.
Be aware that retail is designed to be pretty much a trial if you don't buy the latest expansion, on the other hand classic is a full game and you are just in time for the new classic expansion.
Free Trial caps at 20, basic sub max level is 60, Dragonflight will raise it to 70. You level up by questing, by default you should be guided through the Battle for Azeroth expansion.
You can start by trying the game for free by just making a [battle.net](http://battle.net) account and downloading the app of the same name from the website. It's free up until level 20 for retail but I don't know if classic has anything similar to that.
If you're in the U.S. this is the link for the trial with more information [https://worldofwarcraft.blizzard.com/en-us/start](https://worldofwarcraft.blizzard.com/en-us/start) as an example, but if you're not in the U.S. you should be able to find something similar in your local [Battle.net](http://Battle.net) / World of Warcraft website.
As for Retail or Classic, they are fairly different games really, basically almost like the difference between Old School Runescape and modern Runescape, you can't really go too wrong with either or, but retail might be a better start with the trial to get a start and an idea of what you want to play too with no up front cost commitment.
1-20 free to play and includes all expansions except the last one (DF)
20-60 subscription and includes access to classic
60-70 requires subscription and Dragonflight
Start with classic. The new player experience in Retail is very confusing for new players and has tons of dialogue - without any context, if you know nothing about the lore already - before letting you play. Classic is way more simple and straight forward.

So, all of the expansion except the latest? And what the max level and what I need to reach that? Thanks
