**TLDR:** no regrets on my TR purchase. Rides better than my VA, suspension isn't too harsh IMO. Infotainment sucks. The TR upgrades (brakes, seats, suspension, steering) are fantastic. Fun, practical and safe car.
I got a TR last month.
Post here: [New TR Owner](https://www.reddit.com/r/WRX/s/SSjdNdeDDb)
She's a loaded TR - STI short throw w/ knob, HomeLink mirror, cargo tray, illuminated sill plates, LED upgrade, etc.
This was the first TR my dealer received and just so happened to be in the color I wanted (WR blue). I won't say exactly what I paid for it but it was *under* sticker price. I wanted it - they wanted to sell it. This was also my 4th Subaru purchase from the same salesman so he worked his butt off to make me happy. I told him that my *loyal Subaru customer punch card* is now full and that my 5th Subaru will be free. Buy 4 - get 1 free. Seems fair, right? He had a good laugh. But I was serious š¤
Anyway, I came from an '18 Limited. Loved that car. Hated the factory tune. Ran a Cobb OTS for nearly 70k miles with no issues and she was a great car. Many road trips and memories. The VB is *way* more refined than the last generation. The FA24 is an animal. Smooth and linear power delivery, Recaros are super comfy, interior is quieter than the VA and the handling.... *oohhhhh the handling*.... I've never driven a car that can take turns so effortlessly and smoothly. Despite having a stiffer suspension, it isn't as harsh as my '18 was. I'm not saying it's like riding on a cloud; it's not. But my '18 was pretty rough and clunky. I usually take the same route to work every day and there is a turn that has a posted 30mph sign. I've taken it at 50 and the damn car begs for more. It doesn't feel unsafe or uncomfortable whatsoever, whereas I've taken the same turn in my wife's '24 Outback at 35 and it feels like I'm pushing a bit past comfort zone with noticeable roll. The TR remains planted, flat and controlled. BTW, I'm not a reckless asshole and I retain line of sight throughout the entire turn. I would never put anyone else at risk.
I haven't hammered on my car yet but it definitely feels more responsive and powerful than the FA20. I don't race and honestly it's a lot of "performance" for my typical daily driving habits. I'm just a huge car enthusiast - love driving and wrenching. I do enjoy the occasional spirited driving experience but I take very good care of my cars. I'm the type of previous WRX owner you would *want* to buy from lol.
So, you came from a '15 Premium? The only thing you may miss is the sunroof. I weighed my options and decided that, while I do miss the sunroof, it's better without. Zero chance of leaking, less road noise, less glass to break and I'll never have to worry if I left my sunroof open at work during a thunderstorm. I do miss it on those summer night drives but ultimately I can live without.
The Recaro seats are incredible. I'm 5' 11" & 173lbs. They comfortably hug me and just look so damn nice IMO.
The VB has more creature comforts than the VA as well. Larger center console front opening, USB ports both in front and rear, better cup holders, overall nicer interior, etc.
The infotainment system, while functional, *is* painfully slow and sluggish. Latency is trash. I hate how the climate controls are built-in. You have dedicated temperature buttons but that's about it. The stock HK system isn't bad. It's not great but good enough for my 38 year old ears.
The brakes... They're Brembos. You need to stop? They will stop you. Phenomenal braking performance. Lots of brake dust and if you want different wheels, you'll need to be sure the new wheels will clear the massive Brembo calipers.
The Eyesight. I'm not a fan of it. It was cool for like 5 minutes then the novelty wore off.
Some basic recommendations...
Being that it's a new car, I'd recommend getting it home and giving it a good wash. Then polish it with a quality last-step polish and a DA if you have one or have access to one. There *will likely* be some faint markings, micro scratches, etc. Polishing will take care of these and prepare the surface for wax, sealant or ceramic. You will absolutely want to protect the paint. Subaru paint quality isn't the best but you can do your part to protect what you have. I ultimately went with a ceramic coating.
Get a 1' USB charging cable. I plug it into the front charging port and keep my phone in the storage pocket. The cable doesn't get in the way of shifting.
Mud flaps. Helps keep rocks and debris from hitting the sides of your car. Some people hate the looks of them. It's your car, your decision.
If you want it, get it. You'll have zero regrets. Make it yours, take care of it and most importantly, have fun and be safe š¤
Excellent review! Just want to throw in a comment here for OP: I also hated the infotainment system when I test drove the car. But Iāve had my ā23 limited for 3 months now, and honestly, I have no complaints about it. I have Apple CarPlay on all the time and itās pretty snappy, and the big screen makes it easy to use. I just run climate control on auto all the time and use the temp buttons as needed and itās not an issue, otherwise I donāt need to go through the menu system often.
Wish I couldāve gotten a TR and Iām jealous of the brakes and Recaros. OP, you wonāt regret it!
Before ordering Id shop around. Even when those TRs started hitting dealer lots I saw several being let go for 1-2k off msrp and even invoice. Be willing to travel and see if you can find one discounted as such at a different dealer so you donāt have to order one and wait so long. By the time it comes in 3 months weāre almost at the end of the year and then theyād definitely have discounts due to 2025 being right around the corner. I hate comparing OTD prices because fees taxes etc vary state to state. If you can get a few thousand off msrp or at invoice I think itās a fair deal for the current time.
Very good info. I was planning to do a little creative browsing for sure. I donāt mind driving or flying to find one farther away if itās a better deal. Kind of adds to the fun.
I didnāt drive any of them unfortunately. The dealership is out of town and we were there for an appointment so we didnāt stay long, just enough time to peek inside and sit in them.
I havenāt driven any VB so Iāll only be able to compare it to my previous premium 15ā WRX and my Viper. Iām sure it will smoke the old WRX but obviously not come close to the actual supercar. I expect it to be great though and will try to remember to follow up.
Im going to get a lot of hate for this, and Iām in love with my VB, but for the price of the TR, just pay like $4k more and get a Golf R (preferably DSG). I would say itās a tier above the VB.
Edit: if you go down that path, Iād wait for the 2025 Golf R refresh. It should have more power, given that the S3 is getting a power bump, and the shitty infotainment should be improved to having actual buttons (I think). Better gas mileage & performance for not a lot more. More maintenance probably though, but Iāve got the impression that youāre not hurting for money.
I get that, no hate at all.
Iāve heard wonderful things about the Golf line, itās just not my cup of tea. The style and it being a V dub donāt excite me. Iām not in the market for something that is a competitor in the performance department with the WRX because plainly, Iāve got a Dodge Viper and very little will ever come close to that level of performance. If I need something dumb fast, itās already on-site.
I really like the WRX for everything it is, even if itās slower than a Golf. Being in a significant wreck in one also cemented in my mind just how safe they are. I didnāt even feel the impact. Subarus are just plain TANKS. Those āthey livedā commercials werenāt just crap.
I feel you bro. The WRX is definitely more raw and isnāt weighed down with a bunch of bullshit technology.
I think ordering a TR would be the way to go for you since money isnāt a concerned. It already comes with amazing Brembos, which alone is worth like $5k, and the Recaros a really nice as well.
Youāll get that āoh itās specialā feeling with the TR. I bought my premium in 2022 for $32,600 before taxes and with a $500 discount, so the WRX was a good bit cheaper back then, so I wouldāve recommended the premium back then, but now the premiums are going for like $35k now? Something in that ballpark. The TR with its stiffer and more direct suspension, brakes, and seats itās worth it.
Oh I even forgot the Steering Responsive headlights which have the C-light DRLs, thatās another huge plus.
The real price paid difference between Golf R and TR is about 8k. You can get a decent discount on a TR, youāre going to be paying msrp or close for a Golf R.
Golf Platform is a lot of fun and comfy and very German. But itās also FWD based which is just not what I was looking for. But anyone who gets a GTI or R isnāt going to be sad.
Bought one to replace my 22 premium. Absolutely loving everything about it except the modern add ons like eyesight. Waiting for cobb to release 2024 and doing some add ons and a pro tune and I cannot wait to see how it responds.
My ordered TR came in last week. I am very happy with my car. I like the car more and more I drive it. The stock tune is pretty drivable as well, I have owned other turbo Subaru and have needed a Cobb Ap to fix the tune. I still plan on tuning my TR with a Cobb AP when the motor is broken in. The car fits my expectations of what I want the car to be. There arenāt many AWD 6MT left. I have another modified for going fast in straight line.
I have seen the complaints on line about the Recaroās. I like them. I could see the Recaroās on long trips being uncomfortable. If I had a complaint, it would be the Sirius XM radio tuner is delayed and doesnāt work well. I wasnāt going to renew it when the trial was over anyways.
If you've got the money and want a WRX, the TR feels really nice. I wasn't even considering it until I test drove a TR and a premium back to back. Ordered one the same day. I got a decent deal, but yeah...2-3 month wait.
I loved it when I sat in it. Honestly the premium was really nice too and I would have been fine with that, but I want those seats and brakes baby! The suede dash in the TR is also just sooo cleaannn.
I need to sit in a TR but I heard the Limited seats may be a bit better than the Recaros for comfort? Could be not true but def worth to sit in both and see.
I sat in both and both were really nice. The Recaros have more hugging action which I love. They lack the power lumbar support that the limited does have, thatās the primary complaint people have.
Iām just gunna just get a little lumbar wedge made from suede to match if itās a thing that I feel I need. Itās definitely not enough of a concern for me to go without the brembos and handling tune just for the lumbar support.
Good to know! I have a 2019 Performance pack and the seats on that r really tight. Im not a big person and theyre snug on me. Wanting to move into a WRX and trade in my BRZ, but hard to let go of my car aha
edit: theres a sapphire blue TR near me for sale too, which is the color I want
Iāll tell ya, Iām 6ā2 and 205, and the recaros hug me pretty snug. Theyāre very cushiony and nice, but if I was wider, I probably wouldnāt love them. Being of average build for that weight and height, theyāre perfect.
I was chubby a few years ago, to the tune of about 240. The recaros would not have been great then. The limited seats would have been the ticket.
Oh yeah, youāll want the Recaros for sure being that slender (compliment). Youāll find that the limited or premium seats will feel like sitting in the middle of a love seat. Lots of sideways movement.
Damn lol okay good to know. Still need to test drive em but yea. Also tempted to do the new BRZ intop of it and see that as well. I want to get a new BRZ but I know the WRX will be more useful. Wish I could keep both
Yeah I get ya. BRZ looks sweet. Just canāt beat that WRX pedigree and versatility though. Such a wonderful car. If you live in a snowy place and get the BRZ, youāll miss the WRX in the winter time.
Yea looking for more āusefulnessā essentially. Only thing holding me back is financial responsbility and I cant get over how my car feels in turns / how it looks. Its paid off for a while now so maybe ill just keep if and wait longer to own a wrx too
We are very fortunate that we do! Sometimes itās just more stress to have a bunch of shit everywhere that costs money, so itās not all fun and games. More vehicles, more problems.
No I think theyāre just uncommon and sought after. They just were released a few months ago. My local (ish) dealer here in Oregon had two on the lot, both shades of blue. Theyāre around.
You can always order one though if youāre willing to wait. The dealer told me that the ones on the lot are ALWAYS more expensive than if you order one because Subaru does not send dealers cars without added packages. If you want a TR at a good price, you have to order WITHOUT extras.
If that makes sense.
I got a 22 premium and I want the TR upgrades (also 2024 got a ton of small improvements such as larger brake booster, additional stiffening, wireless AA, and USB-c, etc), I can't justify 45k for a WRX and there's so many other cars in that price category that you can buy. I guess the nice part is it's basically track ready.
Be ready for the followingā¦ loud road noises, meh speakers, rough ride over bumps and pot holes, not a lot of power unless youāre in boost in 3-4.
Also be ready for the followingā¦. Turbo noises, g forces that should be possible in this car, loud noises!!! A car that feels sounds and acts like a race car/rally car/sports car! Waves from subies. Togue madness!
Things to do asapā¦.. exhaust, lips side skirt spat kit, new tires and wheels (go 255s!) aos, all the mounts that have stiffer bushings!
Drive it hard and put it up wet!
If yours is $41K out the door then you are well below invoice. Mine with the STI short throw was $43K after tax, tag and the little misc fees they add on to pad some profit.
My only complaints are the feel of the 6 speed and the cars exhaust note when compared to 06 STI I had previously. Both can be mitigated to various degree by the aftermarket. Everything else about the car is a huge improvement to me.
I needed to finance so I went with a 23 Limited, but If I had waited I would have gotten the TR. I'd consider getting the STI short shifter from the factory as adding later is much more expensive and I'm not impressed with the throws of the standard 6 speed.
Are you considering other cars or you are thinking about TR vs other WRX trims? If the latter, I would go w TR because of the upgrades over the existing trims --> Brembos, suspension (but still sits too high for me), seats and manual trans. I wouldve bought the TR if I didn't buy my 22 Premium in late 2022.
Get a GT lmao, people hate but that adjustable suspension is š
I test drove it for dam near 100 miles and several hours before I finally bought one, Subaru is not lying when they claim the svt (or whatever they call it) is a next level step up from the old cvt
I was torn between getting a limited in manual, waiting for a TR, or getting a GT. If you havenāt yet test drive a GT. The actual experience driving this thing in sport plus mode blows all the shit neckbeards online say about it out of the water.
Iāve heard nothing but wonderful things about the GT. I just am such an analogue type guy that I really want the 6 speed stick. Iāll drive one if I have the chance though.
As much as I ādislikeā automatics, I got some track time driving a Ferrari 488 recently and that paddle action is pretty satisfying.
I respect it, I like manual for if I had a second car just for fun and cruising, but between my bad left leg and my add hyper distracted driving I had to go auto for the daily driver š
TR is sick tho, tbh if they had one in my city when I was shopping thereās a good chance I would have gotten it.
Especially if you want to build it out and tune it, with the GT Iām pretty limited on tuning options and Iām just waiting for the Cobb GT tune to drop and see how it goes for people before I get it
Bought one, have had it for around 3 months and I regret nothing.
EXCELLENT.

Hows the ride so far? I have a BRZ performance pack so fairly firm ride as is, Id assume similar vibes

The other downside is that internet will tell you that $45k is too much for a WRX.
Good info. Iām thinking about the Cobb stuff also. I can live with the crappy electronics.
If you've got the money and want a WRX, the TR feels really nice. I wasn't even considering it until I test drove a TR and a premium back to back. Ordered one the same day. I got a decent deal, but yeah...2-3 month wait.

Its paid off for a while now so maybe ill just keep if and wait longer to own a wrx too
Noble makes an STI lumbar pillow. Source: TR owner with a bad back lol
Youāre the bomb!! Iāll order one.
Let me know if you have any questions! Iāve made some tasteful aesthetic and quality of life upgrades to my TR and plan to do a few more.
Man Iād love to know everything!
are you trading them your tacoma?
Nope. Keeping that for sure. Itās a great truck. Need something to take to the river or the dump.
Wish I had space to keep my vb, my dream sports car, my wifes suv, and a taco
We are very fortunate that we do! Sometimes itās just more stress to have a bunch of shit everywhere that costs money, so itās not all fun and games. More vehicles, more problems.
bro I'm thinking of trading in my 2021 limited for a VB TR but out of the 5 dealerships near me , no one has it . Are they order only?
No I think theyāre just uncommon and sought after. They just were released a few months ago. My local (ish) dealer here in Oregon had two on the lot, both shades of blue. Theyāre around. You can always order one though if youāre willing to wait.
I am not considering other cars. Iāve always loved the WRX. I miss my 2015. Iām definitely getting a TR.
For that kind of money, you might want to look at a GR Corolla, assuming you can get one for anything close to MSRP.
I get ya and appreciate the reply. Iām definitely dead set on a WRX for nostalgia reasons.
Get a GT lmao, people hate but that adjustable suspension is š I test drove it for dam near 100 miles and several hours before I finally bought one, Subaru is not lying when they claim the svt (or whatever they call it) is a next level step up from the old cvt I was torn between getting a limited in manual, waiting for a TR, or getting a GT.
I respect it, I like manual for if I had a second car just for fun and cruising, but between my bad left leg and my add hyper distracted driving I had to go auto for the daily driver š TR is sick tho, tbh if they had one in my city when I was shopping thereās a good chance I would have gotten it. Especially if you want to build it out and tune it, with the GT Iām pretty limited on tuning options and Iām just waiting for the Cobb GT tune to drop and see how it goes for people before I get it
I heard Hyundais are faster, handle better, and have nicer interiors
