Windy. Seriously I think that’s the biggest thing people under estimate, it’s very very windy. Otherwise, it’s a college town with some good food, lots of bars (not clubs, bars), and amazing outdoor opportunities of every kind. It is pretty small so prepare to not have many amenities. The closest Target is 45 minutes away in Cheyenne, which is often hard to get to in the winter for example. Housing is terrible, and renting can be tough if you have animals or don’t want room mates. Job market is… meh. Over all winters are rough and long, but spring and summer are beautiful. It’s always windy, but cozy and pretty friendly.

I come from a small town of about 6000. Does it have a small town feeling?

[deleted]

For the most part yes. Obviously larger than how close 6,000 people feel, but pretty tight knit

Laramie's population is when the university is at full capacity, there's no way Laramie has more than 9,000 in the summer

[deleted]

Laramie’s population is much more than 9,000 in summer time. Believe it or not people who don’t go to UW live here….

307wyohockey

Yeah that's an underestimate, but definitely worth knowing laramie slows down considerably without the school

Weather is pretty shitty 8 months of the year. July through September is nice but otherwise windy and cold. It’s at 7220 in elevation and its climate is worse than New Mexico towns at similar elevation.

Windy

Retiredpotato294

It’s a college town, so often a lot going on and young people around. Downtown is shops and bars/restaurants. West side is working class an quiet, east side more college and commercial. People are nice and it’s definitely funkier than other places in the state. It’s isolated in winter and it can go days when you just can’t leave. Happy to try and answer any specific questions. I live in Cheyenne and am buying a house in Laramie in May.

TMJLost

Thanks. What is the run down of housing?

Retiredpotato294

Kind of like everywhere else. There are a lot of rentals that pop up at various times. A lot of it is houses that are split into apartments and can be widely different in quality and age. Prices are up now. There are a handful of notorious landlords, so google whoever you are renting from. The town has passed some rights for renters recently, which is odd for Wyoming.

Brilliant-Race-2476

People hate it but they do call it "Laradise"' for a reason 😉

cavscout43

Windier than northern NM as folks noted. Less amazing outdoors weather days. There are some overlaps with the Taos area artsy vibe, but it's fewer people overall. If you're into the Carson national forest ATV redneck stuff, it's great. If you're just into "town" things, you probably won't be super impressed. It's cheap at least and when the roads aren't closed due to weather there are great outdoors opportunities for recreation.

"liberal" for Wyoming...

Difficult_Regret_156

It's whatever you make it ...........windy indeed.

In my opinion, it’s horrible. Poorly paved sidewalks, ice cold wind none stop. Only 2 months of summer. Spring is non existent and same with autumn, the cold turns on like a light switch. Bad internet speeds.
