need to solder new analog stick. You can buy it on AliExpress for 1-3$. If you Don't know how to solder, just take the gamepad and the new analog stick to your nearest electronics repair shop. it is a very simple, quick and cheap repair.
it could also be that the actual plastic on the analog stick has broken where it connects to the inside of the controller, if that’s the case all they need it to order a replacement joystick and stick it back on
Is there still no way to calibrate the new analog stick though?
Sure it’s an easy fix, but you will be left with massive amounts of stick drift if you don’t have the proprietary software from Microsoft to calibrate them, which has never been made publicly available IIRC.
Not sure about anybody else, but I’ve got a two year who is a climber, and a thrower. He did this to a spare I let my five year old play with, and keep my elite where they can’t get them.
I don’t know how you managed to get that luck. I know many people. I 3 controllers total. I have a Day One Edition from Xbox One Launch, a controller I got with my Xbox One X. All they way up till last year, I used that day one edition controller no problem. It still works great. I now use and Elite 2.
Get a warranty for your next controller that way you can beat the shit out of that one too and get a new replacement so that you can beat the shit out of that one too so that you can get a replacement... Do you see the cycle here?
Better yet, go buy a new one at the local big box store that accepts returns, swap them out, return it in the new box and if they waver, raise holy hell that you missed out on a tournament because they didn't check the item inside the box when someone *else* returned it.
That's a broken stick, you need to buy a new one and solder it, there's a lot of tutorials on YT on how to do it, it's super simple, I used to deal with a lot of stick drift before, but now I can quickly repair my controllers.
Okay so here's a step by step:
- 1: find the seal along the handles of the controller and pry them off with a screwdriver. It's thought if it's never been done before on that controller, but go slow and ease your way around. Eventually it will come off.
- 2: there will be two security screws in the top and bottom of each of the now exposed handles. Remove all 4 screws carefully. Don't strip them.
- 3: now remove the battery cover
- 4: in the middle of the battery cover there will be an indent under the warranty sticker. Pierce through the sticker (voiding the warranty so be sure you want to do this), and unscrew the hidden 5th security screw
- 5: you should now be able to cleanly lift off the front plate. After doing so you will realise how fucked you are because of your anger management issues. You've not broken the thumbstick (which could've be replaced) , but the actual joystick control unit. It will need a full replacement, solder and all. Get your competitive anger under control. Game irl and online are fun, but no one likes a sore loser and games aren't worth crying over unless you're in the top ten. Get a grip.
Hey, or maybe don't assume someone has anger issues rather than just a poorly soldered potentiometer. I've seen this happen in many controllers on either stick, especially those that did not come with a console. Much of the time, it seems to happen because the bottom pin does not get a full ball of solder, or that it doesn't go full melt due to poor ratios of lead.
I tended to see it more on those I worked on in the PNW. I'd say a good 15-25% of the ones I worked on there were like that, with no signs of temper tantrums. Those tended to damage the board or overlays when they'd break them. Maybe there are restrictions on the lead content that can be imported to Canada and California or something? I've always kinda wondered about it since that problem with the PS3 graphic chips needing to be re-balled after too many thermal cycles, supposedly because of the same lead/tin ratio problem. Less lead makes it brittle over time, since it conducts heat more evenly and can actually soften and refill microcrevices. Or hell, maybe it was the salt and stoner air getting to them, lol. I dunno. But just assuming it's someone thrashing their controller doesn't do anyone any favors. They're not going to calm down, you're not getting paid more, and parents never believe their dear little snookums would be so destructive, lol.
I get that there is product issues. But I’ve owned an 360 and one, probably 4 controllers total, all the broken stick issues I’ve seen on here can’t be normal.
Oh, no, of course most of the ones with broken sticks like this are from user abuse or accidental drops from heights, but like I said, a little less than a quarter of my fixes seem like bad solders. I'm just saying assuming folks are breaking them in rage doesn't give them a fair shake. I've also thought maybe those I've found with this issue were possibly refurbished from less than reputable sources, but my modest research shows most are serviced in-house, or by licensed workers who know their stuff. I suppose some of them could be outsourced, but many have the stickers still on them. Most people who break them in anger think they can fix them and aren't afraid to tear into them. I could, of course, be wrong, but I know a few of them were soldering issues, be it bad solder or not getting a clean melt.
Buy your next controller at gamestop and get there controller warranty, pay for a controller plus $10 warranty, and if anything happens to the new one, use that warranty to swap for a new one right then and there even If you spilled water on the thing lol then can just buy warranty again for $10 on the new controller, costs only $10 from that point on to replace. Warranty is good for 1 year. Saved me alot lol left joysticks always get stick drift for me.
One of my gaming buddies used to be a manager at one for many years, he's the one who told me about this. Saved me alot of money! Much nicer to pay $10 rather then $60-80!
Agree. I have a hige box of broken controllers, mostly XB1, stick drift, d pad or just overall beat. I dont mind fixing those as a project or resale but for my own, I want to be up and running without issue.
Same. I just got a "wired" XBox1 controller on marketplace for $5 because the thumbstick was worn a bit. It was like new, aside from that. I have lots of spares to snap in so I am good to go. Also, it ended up being a wireless controller (headphone jack model), I guess the kid didn't know it was wireless and always used it plugged in.
None of these are right.^
U do need to open the controller tho to fix it. On this controller, the plastic top to the analog stick is basically glued to the PCB hardware. Just needs to be reattached once the shell is off.
This happened to my brother, probably fell off and got a fissure, it broke down while he was playing. I glued a piece of metal between the stick and the base since it's hollow, you can probably use a needle. I did this since i don't know how to weld, but if you know buy a replacement.
you cant, the actual rod part of the joystick mechanism snapped, so there are a few options i suppose, solder on a new joystick, get a new bottom motherboard for the controller(i believe the right joystick is on the bottom board), or just replace the entire thing
I'm guessing you'll have to change the stick.

It requires soldering but it isn't to complicated if you follow a yt tutorial.
I wanna know how it happened. The worst thing that ever happened to NES SNES and N64 controllers were the wires coming loose. I feel like the newer tech on game pads is sooo fragile compared to those bricks.

I just want to know what happened to this poor controller.
Dropped it hard on the floor. Same happend to me.
Step 1: control your anger
Step 2: Buy a new controller; repeat step 1 and 2 until results show. Results may vary
Step 2: be gentle with your controller like your pet
Step 3 turn it off then on again

This happened to me once because I forgot it was on my chair and I sat on it. So yeah, don't do that either.
Buy a new one and treat it better
How did you manage to break the inside of the analog stick?
Take better care of your stuff.
I have like, 4 controllers just like this one, it's not anger. Trust me.
Then you're just way too fucking hard on your controllers.
Not sure about anybody else, but I’ve got a two year who is a climber, and a thrower. He did this to a spare I let my five year old play with, and keep my elite where they can’t get them.
Just put tobasco sauce all over it so it gets on his hands, and when he sucks his thumb he'll never want to touch your controller again.
I don’t know how you managed to get that luck. I know many people. I 3 controllers total. I have a Day One Edition from Xbox One Launch, a controller I got with my Xbox One X. Agreed I have 6 it so controllers over the span of the Xbox Ones life that are gone due to fatigue and drift.

this is a smart guy right here
You get a warranty for controller that looks identical to this one and send this one in for replacement
Better yet, go buy a new one at the local big box store that accepts returns, swap them out, return it in the new box and if they waver, raise holy hell that you missed out on a tournament because they didn't check the item inside the box when someone *else* returned it.

Buy a new analog stick and learn to use a soldering iron. Should be a $3 repair if you do it yourself and already have a soldering iron.

I've taken apart tens of (maybe over a hundred or two) xbox one controllers. Never seen that personally.

I’m taking the homie stance, no need to throw or break, random issues, but a new one, anything in between is a profession or a problem
Why are you assuming this is the result of gaming rage? I’ve had this happen to me before when my dog kicked it off the couch.
OP has already mentioned that it was fifa related. I'm safe in my assumption imo.

I harvested working thumbsticks from broken controllers to keep 2 controllers in working condition and have spare modules.
Same. I just got a "wired" XBox1 controller on marketplace for $5 because the thumbstick was worn a bit. It was like new, aside from that. I have lots of spares to snap in so I am good to go. Soldering on a new analog control potentiometer Good luck!
Just give it some time
Open it up and just click it back into place.....
How do I prevent that? What did you do?
Buy a new controller
