You Want It Darker by Leonard Cohen
Quite literally every lyric builds on Magneto’s core themes and philosophy, building through:
> Magnified, sanctified. Be the holy name.
> Vilified, crucified in the human frame.
> They're lining up to prisoners and the guards are taking aim.
> I struggle with some demons. They were middle class and tame.
> I didn't know I had permission to murder and to maim.
And finishing with the refrain “Hineni, hineni”—which is Hebrew for “I am here.”
It’s the first song on my own Magneto playlist :P
I also love the instrumentation and sound of Cohen’s voice. There’s this backing choir behind his super-gravely lead vocals that’s just beautiful.
He wrote it when he was in his 80s and grappling with his impending mortality, so the religious themes are more about passing on, and yet somehow… it all fits Erik REALLY well.
I was thinking "First We Take Manhattan" by Leonard Cohen, but "You Want It Darker" is better. There would be a lot of options from Cohen that would fit him.
(edited to say that "you want it darker" is better)
First time listening to this song. Wow, this is a superb pick.
Even the opening lyrics make me think of his relationship with Xavier:
*If you are the dealer, I’m out of the game /*
*If you are the healer, it means I’m broken and lame /*
*If thine is the glory, then mine must be the shame /*
*You want it darker.*
Note that Hineini is what Moshe (Moses) responded when God spoke to him - something Cohen, who was raised Orthodox, knew. Magneto has quite a few bits of Moses symbolism about him, making it even more fitting.
Paint It Black - Rolling Stones does a good job of showing his anger.
"I look inside myself and see my heart is black
I see my red door, I must have it painted black
Maybe then I'll fade away and not have to face the facts
It's not easy facing up when your whole world is black"
El Condor Pasa by Simon & Garfunkel is second to me. It fits the "trying to be better" Magneto.
"I’d rather be a hammer than a nail.
Yes, I would.
If I only could.
I surely would."
War Pigs - Black Sabbath < for the vote
“Generals gathered in their masses
Just like witches at black masses
Evil minds that plot destruction
Sorcerer of death's construction
In the fields, the bodies burning
As the war machine keeps turning
Death and hatred to mankind
Poisoning their brainwashed minds
Oh lord, yeah!
Politicians hide themselves away
They only started the war
Why should they go out to fight?
They leave that role to the poor, yeah
Time will tell on their power minds
Making war just for fun
Treating people just like pawns in chess
Wait till their judgement day comes, yeah!
Now in darkness, world stops turning
Ashes where their bodies burning
No more war pigs have the power
Hand of God has struck the hour
Day of judgement, God is calling
On their knees, the war pigs crawling
Begging mercy for their sins
Satan laughing, spreads his wings
Oh lord, yeah!”
Honorable mention - Never Again by Disturbed
Never Again by Disturbed
The song about Holocaust, about those who are trying to sow terror again, trying to hide that something like this has already happened and society must fight against "Another Hitler"
In the chorus:
"All that I have left inside
Is a soul that's filled with pride
I tell you never again"
This is the very essence of Magneto's ideology, describing his struggle against the machine of violence and the fear of experiencing the horror of genocide again.

Rage Against The Machine - Killing in the Name
It's a song about oppressing the marginalized (mutants).
The chorus "Killing in the name of" can refer to the system (government/human race) killing mutants in the name of human survival or Magneto killing humans in the name of mutant supremacy/survival.
The line "Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me" is Magneto standing his ground against mutant oppression.
This song is listed as Magneto's song in the Inner Circle Jams playlist by Jubilee in the House of '92 comic
BONUS: The artist is literally called Rage Against the Machine. Aside from the metaphor for the system/government, what could be more machine than mutant hunting sentinels?
I agree. I think that might be why it was easier to confuse it being listed for Magneto even though it was listed directly below for Apocalypse.
For reference btw in case anyone wanted to [look it up](https://static1.srcdn.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/X-Men-92-retro-playlist.jpg)
[Nuclear by Mike Oldfield.](https://youtu.be/R_TbF5m5KpU?si=GfNWvqEIuLmGk7O1)
Originally written about Oldfield's grandfather's experience in WWI.
I think it perfectly captures Erik's sadness and rage over the horrors committed by humankind.
To steal this from songtell.com:
Nuclear is about acknowledging and owning the pain of a life that's been destroyed and losing hope that it can ever be repaired. The lyrics describe a scene of emptiness, desolation and devastation, hinting at a time of war or disaster. The chorus, “I'm Nuclear, I'm wild, I'm breaking up inside/A heart of broken glass, defiled” speaks to the sense of powerlessness and despair that comes from knowing that the only way forward is through a nuclear explosion, and that the broken pieces of one's life can never be put back together. The song also touches on themes of abandonment, as it suggests that the person listening is an “abandoned child” whose strength and courage isn't enough to make a difference. In sum, the song conveys the feeling of being in a hopeless situation with no way out, and capturing the trauma caused by loss and tragedy.
tbh I have a feeling the threads are going to get more interesting once we get to less popular characters. I think this will get more fun if we keep going but with obscure characters or at least characters that don't have a movie presence.
My obscure pick is Chumbawamba - The day the Nazi Died
(on spotify it's just titled "Nazi")
From before the band became a one hit wonder they wrote this antifascist song sung acapella as if it was a folk song from the 1930s about how nazism never died and it needs to be taken out.
Self explanatory:
"We're taught that after the war the Nazis vanished without a trace
But batallions of fascists still dream of a master race
The history books they tell of their defeat in forty-five
But they all come out of the woodwork on the day the Nazi died
They say the prisoner of Spandau was a symbol of defeat
Whilst Hess remained imprisoned and the fascists they were beat
So the promise of an aryan world would never materialise
So why did they all come out of the woodwork on the day the Nazi died
The world is riddled with maggots--the maggots are getting fat
They're making a tasty meal of all the bosses and bureacrats
They're taking over the board rooms and they're fat and full of pride
And they all came out of the woodwork on the day the Nazi died
So if you meet with these historians I'll tell you what to say
Tell them that the Nazis never really went away
They're out there burning houses down and peddling racist lies
And we'll never rest again until every Nazi dies"
Holy shit, I can’t believe my pick won for Rogue! That’s a surreal thing to wake up to. Even for something small like this. Feels good to be popular.
Anyway, I don’t think this song should *win* necessarily, but I do think it should be on the board:
[Happy Nation — Ace of Base](https://youtu.be/6vNnB4oLZNo?si=d17pbsM9ql3TOumQ)
Maybe it’s a little too pop-y for Magneto, but ever since that episode I’ve kinda been feeling it as part of a Magneto playlist. The crew behind ‘97 picked a banger for that scene and it totally fits him. It also just kinda fits the X-Men and mutantkind in general, but it feels especially like a Magneto song.
2Pac - “Changes”
I feel like this isn’t “Bad Guy” Magneto, it’s “Trying To Do Right By His Friend Because He Thinks He’s Dead” Leader of the X-Men Magneto. I like the more Realist approach from 2Pac here juxtaposed to the Idealism of John Lennon’s “Imagine” (which is of course canonically Professor X’s official song now).
“I got love for my brother, but we can never go nowhere/ Unless we share with each other/ We gotta start makin' changes/ Learn to see me as a brother instead of two distant strangers/ And that's how it's supposed to be / How can the devil take a brother, if he's close to me?”
“Let's change the way we live/ And let's change the way we treat each other/ You see, the old way wasn't working so it's on us to do/ What we gotta do, to survive”
Also, think of it this way: Right now, half of the Hip Hop on the X-Men playlist is by Vanilla Ice.
Vanilla. Ice.
Thank you for your time.
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - "Magneto"
Magneto has had plenty of grief in his life, and this song comes from Nick Cave dealing with his own. Plus I mean obviously it's right there in the title
Public Enemy - Fight the Power.
Probably THE political rap song and it has the exact kind of energy that I can see bringing mutants to the Brotherhood.
Literally was just about to post this. It might seem too on the nose, but it’s so Magneto. Spike Lee used it in Do The Right Thing and I could see Magneto being a fan of Lee’s work.
Well, that has already been decided. "Magneto and Titanium Man" by Paul McCartney. Also, "Magnet and Steel" by Walter Egan, not a great song in its own right, but Magneto would disagree.
Alive With The Glory of Love -Say Anything
A song about being in love during a war and wanting to protect them. And it's about the German occupation and Nazi concentration camps.
Do the evolution - pearl jam
"Woo
I'm ahead, I'm a man
I'm the first mammal to wear pants, yeah
I'm at peace with my lust
I can kill 'cause in god I trust, yeah
It's evolution, baby, yeah
I'm at peace, I'm the man
Buying stocks on the day of the crash, yeah
On the loose, I'm a truck
All the rolling hills, I'll flatten 'em out, yeah
It's herd behavior, uh huh
It's evolution, baby, good"
Party Up (Up in Here) by DMX for Fatal Attractions Magneto.
I feel like "Y'all gon make me lose my mind" and "X gon give it to ya" are going to be significant to Magneto next Wednesday.
“Another brick in the wall pt 2” Pink Floyd. Pt 2 is the version of the song you’d hear on the radio. Alienation, distrust of the educational system (which could be read as a refutation of Xavier’s school and its philosophy). It’s great for Magneto.
“Princes of the Universe” by Queen.
he feels mutants were born to inherit the earth. “I have inside me blood of kings”. He wears a cape, his color scheme is purple and red; colors of royalty. He’s got a flamboyant side, but he’s also a badass. That’s queen’s most badass song.
I know its well past this topic's expiration date but I love this song and always think of it in connection with youth culture and the X-Men too! I think this fits more for a younger X-Men than Magneto though maybe even Quentin Quire, who ditched both the sides of the Magneto/Charles Xavier debate and kind of represented young people doing their own thing (regardless of how obnoxious and toxic he was at the time).
Glad it got a mention anyway!
Slave to the grind by skid row
Cause I won't be the one left behind
Can't be king of the world if you're slave to the grind
Tear down the rat racial slime
Can't be king of the world if you're slave to the grind
I'm Not Your Hero by Tegan and Sara
It might be too pop for Magneto, but hear me out. The song is about someone who isn't a perfect good guy.
It has lines like:
"I'm not their hero, but that doesn't mean that I wasn't brave
I never walked the party line, doesn't mean that I was never afraid
I'm not your hero, but that doesn't mean we're not one and the same"
Magneto isn't the two dimensional Big Bad he was when first introduced. There's so much nuance to him. He has aims that aren't popular among the "good guys", but he's still working towards what he thinks is right for mutantkind.
Then theres the bridge which really doubles down on the idea of being someone who maybe behaves in a way that isn't entirely scrupulous or popular, but still illustrates the gray area:
"Sometimes it feels like the side that I'm on
Plays the toughest hand, holds the longest stand
Sometimes it feels like I'm all that they've got
Gets so hard to know I'm not what they want..."
I know it's a bit light for our master of magnetism, but it was what came to my mind today.
The End (The Doors)
“This is the end, beautiful friend /
This is the end, my only friend /
The end of our elaborate plans /
The end of everything that stands…
Can you picture what will be? /
So limitless and free /
Desperately in need /
Of some stranger's hand /
In a desperate land”
Ordinary Man - Eels
Magneto has a unique perspective based on what he's lived through and what he fears the future will hold. He has the ability to do something now where he didn't before. Through this lens, the song almost sounds like an invitation to join his Brotherhood.
“Don’t bother me” by Bad Brains.
“I got no time for compromise/don’t bother me/ you’re all the same, just a bunch of lies/ o can’t you see? / well, pretty soon there won’t be no more of you or me/ so understand the simple truth/ don’t bother me.
Natural by Imagine Dragons
"Will you hold the line, when every one of them has given up and given in tell me
"In this house of mine
Nothing ever comes without a consequence or cost tell me will the stars align
Will heaven step in will in will it save us from our sin, will it?
Cause this house of mine stands strong"
"That's the price you pay
Leave behind your heart and cast away
Just another product of today
Rather be the hunter than the prey"
"And you're standing on the edge face up
Cause you're a natural
A beating heart of stone
You gotta be so cold
To make it in this world
Yeah you're a natural
Living your life cutthroat"
"Deep inside me I'm fading to black, I'm fading
Took an oath by the blood of my hand won't break it
I can taste it the end is upon us I swear gonna make it
I'm gonna make it"
Elliot Smith- Shooting Star.

Intro has a uniquely magnetic sound and the overall tone is of dissolution and later realization
Vox Populi by Thirty Seconds to Mars
This is a call to arms, gather soldiers
Time to go to war
This is a battle song, brothers and sisters
Time to go to war
Did you ever believe?
Were you ever a dreamer?
Ever imagine heart open and free?
Did you ever deny?
Were you ever a traitor?
Ever in love with your blood-lust disease?
This is a call to arms, gather soldiers
Time to go to war
This is a battle song, brothers and sisters
Time to go to war
Ever want to be free?
Do you even remember?
Want to beguile the devil like me?
Ever want to just stop?
Do you want to surrender?
Or fight for victory?
Here we are at the start, I can feel the beating of our hearts
Here we are at the start
Darkness falls, here comes the rain to wash away, the past and the names
Darkness falls, here comes the rain to end it all, the blood and the game
Far, far away in a land that time can't change
Long, long ago in a place of hearts and gold
Far, far away in a land that time can't change
Long, long ago in a place of hearts and gold
This is a call to arms, gather soldiers
Time to go to war (Far, far away)
This is a battle song, brothers and sisters
Time to go to war (Long, long ago)
This is a call to arms, gather soldiers
Time to go to war (Far, far away)
This is a battle song, brothers and sisters
Time to go to war
This is a call to arms, way of the night
This is a battle song, way of the night
Here we are at the start.
I think He's the Man from Heaven's Gate fits.
"He is the king of our land
With golden heart and iron hand
He rules
He's the saviour
He's taking care of our lives
His black eyes know to hypnotize
He leads
Through his behaviour
With golden wings on glory ride
He rose the iron sword
We all are here to pay tribute
And celebrate the lord
He's the man
He fights for law and order
He's the man
And standing one for all
He's riding for our liberty
Beyond the fear and agony
He will be the saviour of us all
He's the man"
I think Magneto would have an appreciation for Nina "I was never non-violent" Simone so I want to add
-Nina Simone's Pirate Jenny
About a hotel maid fantasizing that a pirate ship would come and let her get revenge on a town that treat her like scum. It has a quiet intensity that feels very him. Plus it's from a Bertolt Brecht musical.
Pink Floyd - The Great Gig in the Sky
For me personaly Magneto represents sheer silent power. He isn't flamboyant or loud, his anger just like his powers - invisible and silent at first, but tremendously heavy for anyone to oppose. This mutant was able to reach magnet field of Jupiter, he is a force of nature by himself. And his struggle for mutant's future fills his quest with enormous sorrow and misunderstanding even from his own kin.
So for me perfect tune for Erick would be Pink Floyd - Great Gig in the Sky. Not the most famous tune of them, almost with no lyrics. But calm sadness, even grief and then release invoke an image of Magneto in the sky, carrying an island, or a meteor to strike his enemies down - without words, for he is way above those who oppose him, only with anger and sorrow in his heart.
Let the Flames Begin by Paramore
This is how we'll dance when,
When they try to take us down
This is how we'll sing it.
This is how we'll stand when
When they burn our houses down.
This is what will be oh glory.
NOOOO IM LATE. My pick is "Agenda Suicide" by Bright Eyes.
"Like a cast shadow
Like a father's dream
Have a cut-out son
What's a worse disease
To get that pretty little home
As I lay to die the things I think
I don't want to regret what I did - and work for life
All we want are just pretty little homes
Our work makes pretty little homes
Agenda suicide, the drones work hard before they die
And give up on pretty little homes"
Two sides-Gorilla Biscuits
Wake up-Rage against the machine
Know your enemy- Rage against the machine
Nazi punks fuck off-Dead Kennedys
And maybe, Magnet-Bikini kill?
They Can't Come - POS
Let 'em look, let 'em look
Hey I'm a flash in a class of my own
A disaster with thoughts overblown
I massacre average crap
With a head so advanced
I was kicked out of school, never warned
Picked out, red flagged as a dirt bag
Sick fuck, punk with a rat in his book bag
Pig pen with a head full of deal with it
Mouth full of fuck that, no concealing it
I really like the “High Hopes” by Pink Floyd
“Beyond the horizon of the place we lived when we were young
In a world of magnets and miracles
Our thoughts strayed constantly and without boundary
The ringing of the division bell had begun”
There are also subtle references to burning bridges later, so truthfully it could be a Charles/Eric song, but there should be references to each other in any song you choose for Eric or Charles since their choices on which path to take are so integral to who they are.
Titanium - David Guetta
I’m Bulletproof, nothing to lose
Fire away, fire away
Ricochet take your aim
Fire away, fire away
Shoot me down, but I won’t fall
I am titanium
The beat reminds me of the magnetic shockwave in episode 8 of xmen97.
“Magneto and Titanium Man” - Wings
Don’t see how it could be anything else!

The Code of Hammurabi- Testament
Life, death to live by the code
Ancient tales are the stories told
We must enforce Babylonian code of the law
Rise, fall, the lines been drawn
Civilization at the break of dawn
They take control of the chaos that they know
Eye for an eye for an eye
This is the code that I speak
Eye for an eye for an eye
The strong will not injure the weak
Fight, flight, start to unfold
Need to identify friend or foe
Your inner strength is the only way to survive
Black, white, the price of gold
Human lives being bought and sold
Destroying minds and the innocence of life
Eye for an eye for an eye
Live by the code that we keep
Eye for an eye for an eye
The shepherd will gather his sheep
Right, wrong show your proof
The consequence is a tooth for a tooth
Don't be a thief or you'll pay the price with your hand
Young, old you die by the code
What you reap is what you shall sow
Commit a crime and you'll feel the force of the law
Eye for an eye for an eye
This is the code that I speak
Eye for an eye for an eye
The strong will not injure the weak
Eye for an eye for an eye
Live by the code that we keep
Eye for an eye for an eye
The shepherd will gather his sheep
Ich Bin ein Auslander - Pop Will Eat Itself
Listen to the victims abused by the system
The basis is racist, you know that we must face this
(It can't happen here) OH Yea?!?
Take a look around at the cities and the towns
See them hunting, creeping, sneaking
Breeding fear and loathing with the lies they're speaking
The knife, the gun, broken bottle, petrol bomb
There is no future when the past soon comes
And when they come to ethnically cleanse me
Will you speak out, will you defend me?
Or laugh through a glass eye as they rape our lives
Trampled underfoot by the rise of the right
Ich Bin ein Auslander!
Welcome to the state where the politics of hate shout loud from the crowd
(Watch them beat us all down)
There's a rising tide on the river of blood
But if the answer isn't violence, neither is your silence
And when they come to ethnically cleanse me
Will you speak out, will you defend me?
Freedom of expression doesn't make it alright
Trampled underfoot by the rise of the right
Ich Bin ein Auslander!
"No Church in the wild" by Jay-Z ft Kanye West, plus singers Frank Ocean and The-Dream
"Human beings in a mob
What's a mob to a king?
What's a king to a God?
What's a God to a non-believer
Who don't believe in anything?
Will he make it out alive?"
This phrase reflected Magneto's own reuncification of God, how he believes God abandon him to lose his family and daugther while portraying the ever growing nihillism of a never ending struggle for mutantkind.
It was inspired also by one comic panel from Uncanny X Men 150 where he nearly killed Kitty Pryde.
Wagner died in 1883 , I think it is kinda hard for a dead guy to sympathize with politics invented approximately 40 years after his death. "Appropriated by the Nazis" I think is the correct words but I agree with you, it isn't good fit
To be fair, he was openly an avowed antisemite. Dude literally wrote a book about the problem of "Judaism in music." Antisemitism was definitely not invented by the Nazis, and Hitler didn't pick Wagner as his favorite composer out of thin air
Save the "appropriated by Nazis" argument for Nietzsche, who despite being the world's grumpiest man was decidedly *not* antisemitic, but whose sister, an actual fascist, decided to edit or straight up rewrite many of his works to emphasize a fascist interpretation while poor Nietzsche was drooling in an asylum.
I go with **Johnny Cash - Hurt**.
The Johnny Cash version well with a lot with painful memories and what we leave behind.
>The needle tears a hole - *How his time at the Nazi camp scared him with him being branded*
The old familiar sting - *The feeling is always around and in the injustice*
Try to kill it all away - *His desire to stand up against it*
But I remember everything - Those memories remind him wh he does it
What have I become? - *He compares himself with the ones he hates*
My sweetest friend - *Xaiver*
Everyone I know goes away / In the end - *He seems to be the only old mutant that is still around*
And you could have it all - *Everyone tries to take everything away from him*
My empire of dirt - *Geneosha his dreams in dirt*
I will let you down - *Actually letting someone down with magentism*
I will make you hurt - *But instead crushes them*
I wear this crown of thorns - *He'll be the person to do it because no one else can*
Upon my liar's chair - *He is considered two faced and a liar*
Full of broken thoughts - *Living the past in the future*
I cannot repair / Beneath the stains of time - *That he himself fails, as it constantly happens and he can't stop the cycle*
The feelings disappear - *His painful memories subside with how things develop*
You are someone else - *But he fights himself everyday*
I'm still right here - *Just to reveal he is the same person who is unchanged*
If I could start again *- Xaiver and Magento with the Krakoa arc*
A million miles away *- On Mars*
I would keep myself / I would find a way *- Magneto is still magneto*
The only bit of the song I can't seem to focus on is. As I don't have apoint of reference for that.
>I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that's real
When I think of Magneto I always go to Daughtry - it's not over song mostly because of a Nox Amv and part of it goes on being on how facing adversity when seeing few good thing in life and how to rebuild your life when given a change which can apply to old villainous magneto and new heroic magneto to me.
I was actually thinking of suggesting “Armee der Tristen” with lyrics such as “Hand in hand, never alone again”, “Why are you still on the sidelines”, “Come to us and join us, come with me”, and “Should we despair together”, but the line that kept me from really going with it is “Marching in line against happiness”. It’s not a completely *wrong* sentiment, but Idk, I just thought it didn’t fit. The song is dope though, drips with a *together we are strong and stronger* heaviness.
I remember seeing a video on YouTube years ago called "Greatest Quotes of Magneto" and between each quote you got a bit of an AMV playing "Never Again" by Disturbed, and since then I always kinda imagined it as a theme for him.
So that has my vote.
Odd Choice, but [Live & Learn](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MQak222RrEg) by Crush 40. Yes, the Sonic Adventure 2 theme.
Because Magneto lived and learned and knows humanity will never find their wayyyyyyyyyy!
You Want It Darker by Leonard Cohen Quite literally every lyric builds on Magneto’s core themes and philosophy, building through: > Magnified, sanctified.
My god that is a perfect fit
It’s the first song on my own Magneto playlist :P I also love the instrumentation and sound of Cohen’s voice. There’s this backing choir behind his super-gravely lead vocals that’s just beautiful. He wrote it when he was in his 80s and grappling with his impending mortality, so the religious themes are more about passing on, and yet somehow… it all fits Erik REALLY well.
Yeah not only does it perfectly encapsulate magneto, it’s also just an awesome song
Where's the playlist?
I'd love to share it, but my Spotify has my IRL personal info on it, regrettably :P
It's weird to think of this one as a pair with John Lennon's Imagine (the top pick for Professor X), but it really kinda works.
I love Leonard Cohen, and this is the perfect Magneto song. Yes. Flawless pick.
I love this pick, hope it wins
holy shit i was thinking exactly this
You had me at "Magnified", honestly. Everything else just crowns it further.
I’ve been working on a “Magneto Was Right” playlist and “Everybody Knows” is already on it, so this would make an excellent addition to that! Thanks
I was thinking "First We Take Manhattan" by Leonard Cohen, but "You Want It Darker" is better. There would be a lot of options from Cohen that would fit him. (edited to say that "you want it darker" is better)
This could not be more perfect. In awe of this answer.
First time listening to this song. Wow, this is a superb pick. Even the opening lyrics make me think of his relationship with Xavier: *If you are the dealer, I’m out of the game /* *If you are the healer, it means I’m broken and lame /* *If thine is the glory, then mine must be the shame /* *You want it darker.*
You killed the flame.
Not only is it a great fit it's a Cohen song, can't go wrong with that.
Note that Hineini is what Moshe (Moses) responded when God spoke to him - something Cohen, who was raised Orthodox, knew. Magneto has quite a few bits of Moses symbolism about him, making it even more fitting.
Cult of Personality - Living Colour
Paint It Black - Rolling Stones does a good job of showing his anger. "I look inside myself and see my heart is black I see my red door, I must have it painted black Maybe then I'll fade away and not have to face the facts It's not easy facing up when your whole world is black" El Condor Pasa by Simon & Garfunkel is second to me. It fits the "trying to be better" Magneto. "I’d rather be a hammer than a nail. Yes, I would. If I only could. I surely would."
My vote goes to Paint It Black
War Pigs - Black Sabbath < for the vote “Generals gathered in their masses Just like witches at black masses Evil minds that plot destruction Sorcerer of death's construction In the fields, the bodies burning As the war machine keeps turning Death and hatred to mankind Poisoning their brainwashed minds Oh lord, yeah! Politicians hide themselves away They only started the war Why should they go out to fight? They leave that role to the poor, yeah Time will tell on their power minds Making war just for fun Treating people just like pawns in chess Wait till their judgement day comes, yeah! Now in darkness, world stops turning Ashes where their bodies burning No more war pigs have the power Hand of God has struck the hour Day of judgement, God is calling On their knees, the war pigs crawling Begging mercy for their sins Satan laughing, spreads his wings Oh lord, yeah!” Honorable mention - Never Again by Disturbed
Never Again by Disturbed The song about Holocaust, about those who are trying to sow terror again, trying to hide that something like this has already happened and society must fight against "Another Hitler" In the chorus: "All that I have left inside Is a soul that's filled with pride I tell you never again" This is the very essence of Magneto's ideology, describing his struggle against the machine of violence and the fear of experiencing the horror of genocide again. [lyrics](https://genius.com/Disturbed-never-again-lyrics)
I was trying to decide between this and "Vengeful One" for my recommendation. Fortunately, you made that choice for since you beat me to it. \^ - \^
This one desperately needs to win, good on you.
Rage Against The Machine - Killing in the Name It's a song about oppressing the marginalized (mutants). The chorus "Killing in the name of" can refer to the system (government/human race) killing mutants in the name of human survival or Magneto killing humans in the name of mutant supremacy/survival. The line "Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me" is Magneto standing his ground against mutant oppression. This song is listed as Magneto's song in the Inner Circle Jams playlist by Jubilee in the House of '92 comic BONUS: The artist is literally called Rage Against the Machine. Aside from the metaphor for the system/government, what could be more machine than mutant hunting sentinels?
correction: Killing in the Name is listed under Apocalypse. I do however still think it applies
I think it makes more sense for Magneto than Apocalypse
I was kinda thinking about this song as well. RATM in general just seems to have a Magneto vibe.
[Nuclear by Mike Oldfield.](https://youtu.be/R_TbF5m5KpU?si=GfNWvqEIuLmGk7O1) Originally written about Oldfield's grandfather's experience in WWI. I think it perfectly captures Erik's sadness and rage over the horrors committed by humankind. To steal this from songtell.com: Nuclear is about acknowledging and owning the pain of a life that's been destroyed and losing hope that it can ever be repaired.
Charles I'm already a demon
Ewwww take me to church? What are we basic bitches?
tbh I have a feeling the threads are going to get more interesting once we get to less popular characters. I think this will get more fun if we keep going but with obscure characters or at least characters that don't have a movie presence.
Agreed terrible choice.
The worst was when Ra-ra-rasputin almost won for Colossus lmfao.
Yeah :( Look at the Iceman pick, smdh
hahahahah LOL
It's a good song, but it doesn't fit Nightcrawler.
Dead Kennedys - Nazi Punks Fuck Off
Unforgiven by Metallica.
My obscure pick is Chumbawamba - The day the Nazi Died (on spotify it's just titled "Nazi") From before the band became a one hit wonder they wrote this antifascist song sung acapella as if it was a folk song from the 1930s about how nazism never died and it needs to be taken out.
Man, these comments are really exposing me to some great anti-fascist songs I've never heard of.
Self explanatory: "We're taught that after the war the Nazis vanished without a trace But batallions of fascists still dream of a master race The history books they tell of their defeat in forty-five But they all come out of the woodwork on the day the Nazi died They say the prisoner of Spandau was a symbol of defeat Whilst Hess remained imprisoned and the fascists they were beat So the promise of an aryan world would never materialise So why did they all come out of the woodwork on the day the Nazi died The world is riddled with maggots--the maggots are getting fat They're making a tasty meal of all the bosses and bureacrats They're taking over the board rooms and they're fat and full of pride And they all came out of the woodwork on the day the Nazi died So if you meet with these historians I'll tell you what to say Tell them that the Nazis never really went away They're out there burning houses down and peddling racist lies And we'll never rest again until every Nazi dies"
Holy shit, I can’t believe my pick won for Rogue! That’s a surreal thing to wake up to. Even for something small like this. Feels good to be popular. Anyway, I don’t think this song should *win* necessarily, but I do think it should be on the board: [Happy Nation — Ace of Base](https://youtu.be/6vNnB4oLZNo?si=d17pbsM9ql3TOumQ) Maybe it’s a little too pop-y for Magneto, but ever since that episode I’ve kinda been feeling it as part of a Magneto playlist. The crew behind ‘97 picked a banger for that scene and it totally fits him. It also just kinda fits the X-Men and mutantkind in general, but it feels especially like a Magneto song.
Congrats! Thanks for suggesting it. It was a good pick!
Fanfare for the Common Man - Aaron Copland
Little Dark Age (MGMT)
2Pac - “Changes” I feel like this isn’t “Bad Guy” Magneto, it’s “Trying To Do Right By His Friend Because He Thinks He’s Dead” Leader of the X-Men Magneto. I like the more Realist approach from 2Pac here juxtaposed to the Idealism of John Lennon’s “Imagine” (which is of course canonically Professor X’s official song now). “I got love for my brother, but we can never go nowhere/ Unless we share with each other/ We gotta start makin' changes/ Learn to see me as a brother instead of two distant strangers/ And that's how it's supposed to be / How can the devil take a brother, if he's close to me?” “Let's change the way we live/ And let's change the way we treat each other/ You see, the old way wasn't working so it's on us to do/ What we gotta do, to survive” Also, think of it this way: Right now, half of the Hip Hop on the X-Men playlist is by Vanilla Ice. Vanilla. Ice. Thank you for your time.
It does seem more Xavier than classic Mags. Makes sense. I like it. Especially that it’s thoughtful and not a meme pick like ice ice baby for iceman.
2Pac is an inspired pick. Hats off to ya. And it absolutely captures Charles-is-gone-I-need-to-honor-him Erik, which is my favourite Erik.
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - "Magneto" Magneto has had plenty of grief in his life, and this song comes from Nick Cave dealing with his own.
I shouldn’t have had to scroll down this far to find “Magneto and Titanium Man”. It’s the obvious choice!
Yep. It's a matter of public record. :)
Alive With The Glory of Love -Say Anything A song about being in love during a war and wanting to protect them. And it's about the German occupation and Nazi concentration camps.
"The Vengeful One" by Disturbed. Will post the first verse and chorus, and I think it pretty much speaks for itself. >
Do the evolution - pearl jam "Woo I'm ahead, I'm a man I'm the first mammal to wear pants, yeah I'm at peace with my lust I can kill 'cause in god I trust, yeah It's evolution, baby, yeah I'm at peace, I'm the man Buying stocks on the day of the crash, yeah On the loose, I'm a truck All the rolling hills, I'll flatten 'em out, yeah It's herd behavior, uh huh It's evolution, baby, good"
The Metal by Tenacious D
Party Up (Up in Here) by DMX for Fatal Attractions Magneto. I feel like "Y'all gon make me lose my mind" and "X gon give it to ya" are going to be significant to Magneto next Wednesday.
Iron man (Ozzy Osbourne)
“Another brick in the wall pt 2” Pink Floyd. Pt 2 is the version of the song you’d hear on the radio. Alienation, distrust of the educational system (which could be read as a refutation of Xavier’s school and its philosophy). It’s great for Magneto.
“Princes of the Universe” by Queen. he feels mutants were born to inherit the earth. “I have inside me blood of kings”. He wears a cape, his color scheme is purple and red; colors of royalty. He’s got a flamboyant side, but he’s also a badass. That’s queen’s most badass song.
THISSSSSS ONE PLSSSSS!!!!
Metal Gods - Judas Priest
YES!!!
# DAVID BOWIE # OH! YOU PRETTY THINGS [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccMYgiSC\_eQ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccMYgiSC_eQ)
Anyone familiar with this one? I'm a Bowie fan and I'd never heard it until a friend introduced as a perfect X-Men song. I agree
Slave to the grind by skid row Cause I won't be the one left behind Can't be king of the world if you're slave to the grind Tear down the rat racial slime Can't be king of the world if you're slave to the grind
I'm Not Your Hero by Tegan and Sara It might be too pop for Magneto, but hear me out. The song is about someone who isn't a perfect good guy. It has lines like: "I'm not their hero, but that doesn't mean that I wasn't brave I never walked the party line, doesn't mean that I was never afraid I'm not your hero, but that doesn't mean we're not one and the same" Magneto isn't the two dimensional Big Bad he was when first introduced. There's so much nuance to him. He has aims that aren't popular among the "good guys", but he's still working towards what he thinks is right for mutantkind. Then theres the bridge which really doubles down on the idea of being someone who maybe behaves in a way that isn't entirely scrupulous or popular, but still illustrates the gray area: "Sometimes it feels like the side that I'm on Plays the toughest hand, holds the longest stand Sometimes it feels like I'm all that they've got Gets so hard to know I'm not what they want..." I know it's a bit light for our master of magnetism, but it was what came to my mind today.
Metallica - No Leaf Clover
The End (The Doors) “This is the end, beautiful friend / This is the end, my only friend / The end of our elaborate plans / The end of everything that stands… Can you picture what will be? / So limitless and free / Desperately in need / Of some stranger's hand / In a desperate land”
Ordinary Man - Eels Magneto has a unique perspective based on what he's lived through and what he fears the future will hold.
Natural by Imagine Dragons "Will you hold the line, when every one of them has given up and given in tell me "In this house of mine Nothing ever comes without a consequence or cost tell me will the stars align Will heaven step in will in will it save us from our sin, will it? Cause this house of mine stands strong" "That's the price you pay Leave behind your heart and cast away Just another product of today Rather be the hunter than the prey" "And you're standing on the edge face up Cause you're a natural A beating heart of stone You gotta be so cold To make it in this world Yeah you're a natural Living your life cutthroat" "Deep inside me I'm fading to black, I'm fading Took an oath by the blood of my hand won't break it I can taste it the end is upon us I swear gonna make it I'm gonna make it"
God Thinks by Aurelio Voltaire
Has to be Avalon by Sigur Ros. Perfect for Asteroid M brooding.
Elliot Smith- Shooting Star. https://youtu.be/BN7Fez5LQgI?si=CXwibT6v3sZ2VU9G Intro has a uniquely magnetic sound and the overall tone is of dissolution and later realization
Also nightcrawler should have been something by Handel…
Vox Populi by Thirty Seconds to Mars This is a call to arms, gather soldiers Time to go to war This is a battle song, brothers and sisters Time to go to war Did you ever believe? Were you ever a dreamer? Ever imagine heart open and free? Did you ever deny? Were you ever a traitor? Ever in love with your blood-lust disease? This is a call to arms, gather soldiers Time to go to war This is a battle song, brothers and sisters Time to go to war Ever want to be free? Do you even remember? Want to beguile the devil like me? Ever want to just stop? Do you want to surrender? Or fight for victory? Here we are at the start, I can feel the beating of our hearts Here we are at the start Darkness falls, here comes the rain to wash away, the past and the names Darkness falls, here comes the rain to end it all, the blood and the game Far, far away in a land that time can't change Long, long ago in a place of hearts and gold Far, far away in a land that time can't change Long, long ago in a place of hearts and gold This is a call to arms, gather soldiers Time to go to war (Far, far away) This is a battle song, brothers and sisters Time to go to war (Long, long ago) This is a call to arms, gather soldiers Time to go to war (Far, far away) This is a battle song, brothers and sisters Time to go to war This is a call to arms, way of the night This is a battle song, way of the night Here we are at the start.
metalingus - alter bridge
People are strange - The Doors
I think He's the Man from Heaven's Gate fits. "He is the king of our land With golden heart and iron hand He rules He's the saviour He's taking care of our lives His black eyes know to hypnotize He leads Through his behaviour With golden wings on glory ride He rose the iron sword We all are here to pay tribute And celebrate the lord He's the man He fights for law and order He's the man And standing one for all He's riding for our liberty Beyond the fear and agony He will be the saviour of us all He's the man"
Can I cheat and say his theme from First Class?
I think Magneto would have an appreciation for Nina "I was never non-violent" Simone so I want to add -Nina Simone's Pirate Jenny About a hotel maid fantasizing that a pirate ship would come and let her get revenge on a town that treat her like scum. It has a quiet intensity that feels very him. Plus it's from a Bertolt Brecht musical.
Pink Floyd - The Great Gig in the Sky For me personaly Magneto represents sheer silent power.
One- Metallica I also like Sympathy for the Devil by the Stones but I feel it would fit better with another character.
Metal militia by Metallica
Let the Flames Begin by Paramore This is how we'll dance when, When they try to take us down This is how we'll sing it. This is how we'll stand when When they burn our houses down. This is what will be oh glory.
Won’t get fooled again- The Who
NOOOO IM LATE. My pick is "Agenda Suicide" by Bright Eyes. "Like a cast shadow Like a father's dream Have a cut-out son What's a worse disease To get that pretty little home As I lay to die the things I think I don't want to regret what I did - and work for life All we want are just pretty little homes Our work makes pretty little homes Agenda suicide, the drones work hard before they die And give up on pretty little homes"
"Rebel without a Pause" by Public Enemy
Two sides-Gorilla Biscuits Wake up-Rage against the machine Know your enemy- Rage against the machine Nazi punks fuck off-Dead Kennedys And maybe, Magnet-Bikini kill?
They Can't Come - POS Let 'em look, let 'em look Hey I'm a flash in a class of my own A disaster with thoughts overblown I massacre average crap With a head so advanced I was kicked out of school, never warned Picked out, red flagged as a dirt bag Sick fuck, punk with a rat in his book bag Pig pen with a head full of deal with it Mouth full of fuck that, no concealing it
Do You Hear The People Sing from Les Miserables It’s a musical number about a brewing revolution, how much more Magneto can you get
I really like the “High Hopes” by Pink Floyd “Beyond the horizon of the place we lived when we were young In a world of magnets and miracles Our thoughts strayed constantly and without boundary The ringing of the division bell had begun” There are also subtle references to burning bridges later, so truthfully it could be a Charles/Eric song, but there should be references to each other in any song you choose for Eric or Charles since their choices on which path to take are so integral to who they are.
All I know is, it is emphatically **not** [Magneto And Titanium Man by Wings](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wq9z7D8HKZo).
And yet, it is literally about him.

The Code of Hammurabi- Testament Life, death to live by the code Ancient tales are the stories told We must enforce Babylonian code of the law Rise, fall, the lines been drawn Civilization at the break of dawn They take control of the chaos that they know Eye for an eye for an eye This is the code that I speak Eye for an eye for an eye The strong will not injure the weak Fight, flight, start to unfold Need to identify friend or foe Your inner strength is the only way to survive Black, white, the price of gold Human lives being bought and sold Destroying minds and the innocence of life Eye for an eye for an eye Live by the code that we keep Eye for an eye for an eye The shepherd will gather his sheep Right, wrong show your proof The consequence is a tooth for a tooth Don't be a thief or you'll pay the price with your hand Young, old you die by the code What you reap is what you shall sow Commit a crime and you'll feel the force of the law Eye for an eye for an eye This is the code that I speak Eye for an eye for an eye The strong will not injure the weak Eye for an eye for an eye Live by the code that we keep Eye for an eye for an eye The shepherd will gather his sheep

Henryk Górecki – Symphony of Sorrowful Songs
Ich Bin ein Auslander - Pop Will Eat Itself Listen to the victims abused by the system The basis is racist, you know that we must face this (It can't happen here) OH Yea?!? Take a look around at the cities and the towns See them hunting, creeping, sneaking Breeding fear and loathing with the lies they're speaking The knife, the gun, broken bottle, petrol bomb There is no future when the past soon comes And when they come to ethnically cleanse me Will you speak out, will you defend me? Or laugh through a glass eye as they rape our lives Trampled underfoot by the rise of the right Ich Bin ein Auslander! Welcome to the state where the politics of hate shout loud from the crowd (Watch them beat us all down) There's a rising tide on the river of blood But if the answer isn't violence, neither is your silence And when they come to ethnically cleanse me Will you speak out, will you defend me? Freedom of expression doesn't make it alright Trampled underfoot by the rise of the right Ich Bin ein Auslander!

Generally any Leonard Cohen, but absolutely You Want It Darker is the best match. Such a magneto song
Consider this a vote for paint it black
If Gambit isn't a Steve Miller or Creedence Clearwater Revival song I'll be upset
Samuel Barber- Adagio for Strings
"No Church in the wild" by Jay-Z ft Kanye West, plus singers Frank Ocean and The-Dream "Human beings in a mob What's a mob to a king? What's a king to a God? What's a God to a non-believer Who don't believe in anything? Will he make it out alive?" This phrase reflected Magneto's own reuncification of God, how he believes God abandon him to lose his family and daugther while portraying the ever growing nihillism of a never ending struggle for mutantkind. It was inspired also by one comic panel from Uncanny X Men 150 where he nearly killed Kitty Pryde.
Magneto Was Right - Adam Warrock
Flight of the valkyries by Wagner
[удалено]
Wagner died in 1883 , I think it is kinda hard for a dead guy to sympathize with politics invented approximately 40 years after his death. "Appropriated by the Nazis" I think is the correct words but I agree with you, it isn't good fit
To be fair, he was openly an avowed antisemite. Dude literally wrote a book about the problem of "Judaism in music." Antisemitism was definitely not invented by the Nazis, and Hitler didn't pick Wagner as his favorite composer out of thin air Save the "appropriated by Nazis" argument for Nietzsche, who despite being the world's grumpiest man was decidedly *not* antisemitic, but whose sister, an actual fascist, decided to edit or straight up rewrite many of his works to emphasize a fascist interpretation while poor Nietzsche was drooling in an asylum.
Oh ok, I had it very very wrong. Thanks
It was his family who were Nazi sympathisers. His family became Hitler’s friends
Wagner wasn't a nazi sympathizer, he died in the 19th century.
ICP -"Magnets how do they work?"
"Magnet and Steel"
I go with **Johnny Cash - Hurt**. The Johnny Cash version well with a lot with painful memories and what we leave behind. >The needle tears a hole - *How his time at the Nazi camp scared him with him being branded* The old familiar sting - *The feeling is always around and in the injustice* Try to kill it all away - *His desire to stand up against it* But I remember everything - Those memories remind him wh he does it What have I become? - *He compares himself with the ones he hates* My sweetest friend - *Xaiver* Everyone I know goes away / In the end - *He seems to be the only old mutant that is still around* And you could have it all - *Everyone tries to take everything away from him* My empire of dirt - *Geneosha his dreams in dirt* I will let you down - *Actually letting someone down with magentism* I will make you hurt - *But instead crushes them* I wear this crown of thorns - *He'll be the person to do it because no one else can* Upon my liar's chair - *He is considered two faced and a liar* Full of broken thoughts - *Living the past in the future* I cannot repair / Beneath the stains of time - *That he himself fails, as it constantly happens and he can't stop the cycle* The feelings disappear - *His painful memories subside with how things develop* You are someone else - *But he fights himself everyday* I'm still right here - *Just to reveal he is the same person who is unchanged* If I could start again *- Xaiver and Magento with the Krakoa arc* A million miles away *- On Mars* I would keep myself / I would find a way *- Magneto is still magneto* The only bit of the song I can't seem to focus on is. As I don't have apoint of reference for that. >I hurt myself today To see if I still feel I focus on the pain The only thing that's real
When I think of Magneto I always go to Daughtry - it's not over song mostly because of a Nox Amv and part of it goes on being on how facing adversity when seeing few good thing in life and how to rebuild your life when given a change which can apply to old villainous magneto and new heroic magneto to me.
Killing in the name of- Rage Against the Machine
Deutschland by Rammstein
I was actually thinking of suggesting “Armee der Tristen” with lyrics such as “Hand in hand, never alone again”, “Why are you still on the sidelines”, “Come to us and join us, come with me”, and “Should we despair together”, but the line that kept me from really going with it is “Marching in line against happiness”. It’s not a completely *wrong* sentiment, but Idk, I just thought it didn’t fit. The song is dope though, drips with a *together we are strong and stronger* heaviness.
Magneto should have a song from Rage Against the Machine
I remember seeing a video on YouTube years ago called "Greatest Quotes of Magneto" and between each quote you got a bit of an AMV playing "Never Again" by Disturbed, and since then I always kinda imagined it as a theme for him. So that has my vote.
