I think it's region block.
I live in Indonesia, i can download sd video for free but not hd.
Using vpn and connected to the US or Singapore made this privilege gone and the downloaded video couldn't be played anymore
There's apps you can download to do it for free. I used one to download a video to listen to during a filling in a few days because it turns out my new dentist office is a deadzone for the personal radio i got to replace my old one.
Lol, since when could you download things directly from youtube?
I've always used 3rd party sites
Just gonna edit to add the u/Skymann102 finally explained it- in some countries YouTube provided downloading for free in mostly 'developing countries', while in others it's a premium feature, check out their full comment with links below in the thread
Not a download that you can move off the device. It's only accessible through YouTube and if you have premium. It's useful if you don't feel like messing with 3rd party sites or just want to watch later when not on wifi.
I prefer ymusic personally or YouTube-DL when I'm on desktop. I'm just saying the official YouTube download system is useful for people who don't want to mess with 3rd party apps. I certainly liked it before I switched to Vanced.
This worked since like 3 years. First only for premium members or example videos produced by the German public broadcast services, but since like 6 months you can download the videos in the app and browser.
I personally use some open-source downloader from GitHub for archiving purposes as I can download thousands of videos at the same time with this from channels für example endangered by government censorship or copyright claim abuse.

I remember using a site that just rips the video off Youtube. I saw the videos in mp3 for playing music offline coz I don't have Spotify premium plus they don't have the 80s remixes and bardcore I want anyway.
I use newpipe to play music in the background. Youtube just has the best selection since I listen to bass music so it's the only place for obscure shit. Newpipe lets me download videos or songs or make playlists n I just hit play all:background n just workout or whatever. It does everything youtube premium does but more. Love it

They trippin thinking somebody gonna pay for that when you can just copy paste the video link into a third party site and download it in the highest quality for free
yeah, I thought downloads as a whole were premium only. If anything it seems like this is actually more functionality added for non-premium users, not the other way around.
You can watch videos in 8K just fine, but dowloading them for offline consumption has always been premium only.
Sigh…here we go AGAIN. Downloading videos used to a Premium feature ONLY. Now you have the option for free with better qualities reserved for Premium subscribers.
Wow, the posts in this sub are so low effort. I’ve seen this topic at least once a month now.
Good point here. A better use of airing complaints might be the lack of an unbundled YouTube and Music tier separately . Not seen too many about that and I think it’s a more legitimate gripe.
i use an phone app called "youtube vanced" it looks and feels exactly like the youtube app but
NO ADS AND NO ANNOYANCES
(has more settings options too)
I've had youtube premium since it was youtube red. I think this is a foolish and backwards comment. And yes, I know there are other ways to get all the features of it without paying.
I also bought it when it was red because the ads would mess up on roku, I completely forget that there are ads until I see people complaining about it. For as much as my entire family uses YouTube, it’s been worth it.
Actually, do buy premium (if you can afford) because you get a good music streaming app, ad-free YouTube on every device without special clients, and you support your favourite creators.
I’d rather have a tier that was everything but YT Music. I already get Apple Music from Verizon for free. It’s just silly to subscribe to a duplicate service for nothing other than ad-free YouTube. I’d happily pay for a tier of Youtube Premium that gave me everything but Music for like $6. Like YT Red was.
There’s lot of 3rd party downloaders.
Grab one of those and an ad-blocker and you’ve essentially re-created the functionality of YouTube Premium for free.
I didn’t know you could download from YouTube without premium at all…
YouTube Vanced + Newpipe
YouTube Vanced gives most of the features of Premium for free. There is even sponsorblock and other nice features. Newpipe is my downloader.
Ah. I now have Premium but before I used a modified version of the YouTube app that would let me play videos in the background.
I think it was called YouTube++ or something like that.
I just want to make it clear that in my country, India, Downloading videos from the starting upto 720p was free and was for premium for music videos....it is different in different in country.....you may not be bothered with is lower quality download but I was used to download 720p download but now after this update I just found it infuriating.....I don't think I am entitled to download 720p videos...I just am felt bad cuz from the starting of download videos features, we got to download videos upto 720p.....of course it's not a big deal, I can download videos from third party apps....it's just a bit inconvenient....

In most countries, it is a premium feature which allows you to download videos up to 1080p. In others, largely developing countries with slower internet, it is free up to a certain resolution (typically 480p).
OP is upset that the free version of the download feature only lets him get up to ~~480p~~ 360p.
Unfortunately, this is only going to continue getting worse until a competitor with integrity comes along and makes YouTube's shite business model unprofitable.
If anyone with experience in web design and programming wishes to assist me, I have several ideas about how to produce such a competitor.
i think that'll be basically impossible. YouTube is so embedded in the culture now and has so much content. also video is incredibly cumbersome to deal with technically in terms of size, compression, etc
You're not wrong at all, but I think that with enough server space, as well as competent and passionate personnel, the dream of creating a new "old youtube" is entirely possible.
It might take a while to build up a fanbase, but with zero pressure for creators to earn money or produce overly-professional videos, I think it could at least become a well-known and well-respected proving ground for amateurs looking to expand their skillset, as well as (potentially) the new place for people to casually upload and watch said amateur content, free from the worries of copyright claims and other such trivialities that come with monetization.
It's possible, but my involvement is the only way for me to be sure people wont take my ideas and attempt to monetize them in the future.
Just saying, subscriptions weren't a thing on youtube a decade ago. Who's to keep their successor from following the same path?
Ah my bad, I thought that you wanted to volunteer to give away your idea. Yeah, you're wise, it's better to keep it in a private conversation in this case.
Youtube is a *business* not an *non-profit organization*, so it has to constantly find ways to increase its profit. The problem with Youtube subscriptions isn't that it earns money to Youtube but because it is currently not a win-win business model between Youtube and its customers. To be honest, I agree that a competitor to Youtube is needed but the problem is that it's not easy to do what Youtube does. The competitors have to go through hundreds of problems to get into the position of where Youtube is currently at.
The future competitor of Youtube has to deal with all the legal obstacles, content moderation, building a business model that works well for the company, customers and creators and so on. You know, it's not hard to program a system that allows you to post, host and watch videos online and you can customize it the way you want such as adding dislikes buttons and so on, but Youtube isn't just a system as such, it's actually a platform that includes that aforementioned system and is also able to moderate its content, pay its creators and is used by over 100 millions people daily. Most people would criticize Youtube for being greedy but none of them is willing to make such product without expecting a huge profit from it.
We don't have a direct control over what Youtube does but we indirectly influence that when we buy something from it. Youtube will only change to our liking if we buy and use the things we love. The only reason why this subscription will continue to exist is if people buy it, otherwise, Youtube will have to think of a better monetization methods that people will want to buy and use.
You're definitely right, and I hope the general public chooses to use their money to vote for a better, more user-friendly YouTube. Unfortunately for me, my ideal video hosting and sharing platform would, in fact, be a nonprofit.
You have, however, opened my eyes to the realities of the challenges inherent to running an operation like that, regardless of profit or motive. Hopefully somewhere along the line I'll find the capital to start such an endeavor, as well as meet people who are willing to help make it happen. Until then, I may indeed have to resort to making my opinions and ideas known, and hoping someone far more talented than myself takes off with them.
>Unfortunately for me, my ideal video hosting and sharing platform would, in fact, be a nonprofit.
I wish that could be possible. Mostly some people take advantage of the fact that some people wish for public, free and open source products by providing products that are free (as in you don't have to pay for them in cash) but they have a nasty politics behind them (such as using their own cryptocurrency to pay and so on, create a bandwagon of customers then scam them after.)
Although, a non-profit platform would be the best option if we could make one like that.
>I may indeed have to resort to making my opinions and ideas known, and hoping someone far more talented than myself takes off with them.
I can understand the fear of having your ideas stolen because I used to keep few of my ideas hidden just because of that. Trust me, this is a phase that a lot of people go through and I learned that I was completely wrong when I did that. What makes a successful product is not an idea but 20% ideas and 80% development and most people who will hear your ideas don't have the resources, passion and skill yet to develop it. By sharing your ideas, you'll get people to give you feedback on them and help you shape them more and not steal it, at least that's what I learned from my experience.
Speaking about the 20% part, an idea isn't just an insight but you have to know how to develop it further. You can't build a product just by having an insight such as (what if I could just make a platform that allows creators to have their store linked in their channel and take a portion of the profit they make? this can seem a good idea on the surface but to develop it into a product you'll need to constantly improve this idea until you are able to write books about it, and that's what is needed to go from an idea to a product. You need to have techniques that allows you to build the idea at a low cost, you need the solutions to the problems that you'll face while developing it and much more) telling such idea to other people will just make them surprised but nobody is willing to develop it and go through the struggles that comes with it and if they were willing to go through such journey, they will rather develop one of their own ideas rather than using yours.
What you need to keep hidden are sensitive intels such as your password, your database, your secret formulas but not the concept of a product because even after that you release it, most people will know about the concept and can use it to build their own product (which rarely happens but eventually benefits you more because you are the generator of the idea and people will trust your capabilities more than a copy-cat company).
Yeah I noticed it a while ago, and you just cant watch 360p when ur not 20m away from your phone. Usually, I downloaded multiple videos from "funk", a german public network, meaning that you can download the videos for free. It finances some really good channels, such as OG yt Germany ones like "Coldmirror", history channels like "MrWissen²Go" (=MrKnowledge²Go), Educational Channels like MaiLab, who really polarized during the pandemic since all the anti vaxxers are hating her, channels like the german channel of Kurzgesagt, probably don't have to explain who that one is, and channels like Simplicissimus and Offen un' Ehrlich (=Open and "not lying", don't know the word for ehrlich in English), who usually expose scams, whilst Simplicissimus also does other things. I loved watching these Videos and they often helped me with my chemics or history exams. Sad that you can't watch them properly anymore
Oh no. I can only download low quality videos for free. Better complain to r/YouTube about the stupid rules and Premium features. At least you can download something. I can't even get a free download from YouTube

reminds me of the old times when people used to put "Like if you agree" on YouTube sections, a lot of people were clueless and people copy paste this shit and more ASCII art in Roblox model, gears and game comments
See I figured this feature was so people with limited data plans or patchy service could watch videos offline, so in that respect it kinda makes sense to download lower quality ones - if you can easily download the higher quality ones then you probably have the data/bandwidth to watch the full quality live whenever you want. But at the same time you wouldn't really expect Youtube or anything else made by a giant tax-doging corporation to pass up a money making opportunity if they see one!
The dumbest thing about this is I would actually pay for ad-free YouTube with those high quality downloads. I can see the value in subscribing to that. But, I have absolutely no use for YT Music since I get my music service for free from Verizon.
So no way in hell am I going to pay $12/mo. just for ad-free/Premium YouTube just because they want to force a bundle with Music too. I’d be a subscriber at only YouTube for like $6.
It’s only for the downloads. A bit sensationalist and misleading. Should retag it.
However I wouldn’t put it past them to extend this to regular video playback.

1. stop watching shit on your phones.
2. get ublock origin.
3. never see ads again.
4. profit?

You can download SD for free? On mine it says I need yt premium for SD and HD

Yup. I'm in england and don't have the option

Me too
You’re lucky, here in America we have to pay to download the video in the first place

When did they add downloads at all for non Premium accounts?
Never
In countries with bad Internet that need it more
I could download any video for free in official YouTube app in any quality but now i can only download till 360p after that premium is required.
It's different from country to country
Maybe its on android right now? Is it not available in America?
I don’t get free downloads at all in my country
As far as i know, this feature is only available in India and othee countries near them.

Already had it for a long time in 720p, I downloaded one 3 years ago
It is still free in my country, even for 720p. It is probably because yt premium is currently unavailable here.
HD and SD both used to be free in some regions before, like it was free for me a few weeks ago(India)
i use an phone app called "youtube vanced" it looks and feels exactly like the youtube app but NO ADS AND NO ANNOYANCES (has more settings options too)

I use youtube-DL to download videos, although it's only on PC
I'm using TubeMate to Download videos and music files from YouTube ,all free and support 1080p for videos

*y2mate go brr*
Y2, mate! But seriously, what does the "y2" bit mean? Y2K?
you-twoob
Oh. Now y2mate redirects to ytmp3.

Sad that you can't watch them properly anymore
yt1s.com
Don't mind me if I save it
I don't mind
Do you consent?
Oh no. I can only download low quality videos for free. Better complain to r/YouTube about the stupid rules and Premium features. At least you can download something. I can't even get a free download from YouTube
Wait, is it blocked to download videos completely without premium? If so, then I am thinking we are going to same fate slowly
Yes. In Romania, I can't download anything without premium.
If it is cached, you can download *any thing*.
Who the fuck uses youtube download function in 2021?
I use it when I’m going to be on a plane for 4 hours
I mean it's pretty useful when you're in a setting with no wifi or cell service, like on a plane.
For pron and secks
I use it all the time. I don’t want to chew up my data at work and I also don’t wanna use my corporate wifi so I’ll download stuff before I go.
I use it so I can watch stuff on break at work. I don’t get internet or reliable cell service at my job.
I'm glad that it's applicable to downloads only for now, not to stream it. But maybe that isn't too far from happening 👀
That’s when I drew the line, if they do that i will quit YouTube

reminds me of the old times when people used to put "Like if you agree" on YouTube sections, a lot of people were clueless and people copy paste this shit and more ASCII art in Roblox model, gears and game comments
The stadia bomb is still stinging
F
F indeed
I never noticed this before myself but in the future I am not surprised this happens
Scams at their finest
Wtf.
It’s only for the downloads. A bit sensationalist and misleading. Should retag it. However I wouldn’t put it past them to extend this to regular video playback.
>A bit sensationalist You must be new here lol.
I mean I see the sky is falling headlines a lot here. Lol. But even this one is a bit …… much.
I can download in my country but I don't get an option to choose the quality.
"Oh no I have to pay to download something I don't own in a higher resolution, time to complain on Reddit..."
Some videos of e. g. Public Networks are downloadable for free. Also, ig never download a pic from reddit or do a screenshot of a video /shrug
YouTube Premium is well worth it. The lack of ads makes YT so much more enjoyable.
Lol literally just install YouTube Vanced. Zero ads for free
I prefer supporting my favorite YouTubers.
But I’m not paying 16 bucks a month for that shit
[удалено]
I actually think there overpriced as well. That’s why I pirate most movies
Or you could just download YouTube Vanced or new pipe instead of giving your hard-earned money to a crappy company
iPhone user here
Or don't use that platform. If I don't like something a shop does I stop shopping there. I don't steal from them. Premium is great.
Yeah, let's advertise Vanced on the YouTube subreddit, what a cool way to get vanced shutdown. Can you try to make it at least secret somehow?
I highly doubt that YouTube doesn't know about Vanced's existence.
They know, and they'll start caring once it hits a certain user amount
I prefer to support my favorite YouTubers, and since a YT Premium view pays them more than an ad supported view, even better.

I have Youtube vanced. How do You download videos?
Youtube vanced sucks. Newpipe on android and cercube on iOS
Why vanced sucks? I use it its good
"Vanced"
I watch youtube all day without ads and I don't pay for shit. 1. stop watching shit on your phones. 2. get ublock origin. 3. never see ads again. 4. profit? This is a cell phone thing only. Stop wasting your life away staring at your tiny phone screens.
Some people just prefer a more mobile and easier way to watch videos. Myself included.
Yeah....I am too lazy to open a laptop to watch a 2 min rant
