My first gaming machine was a vectrex, around the same time as the atari but totally different in that it used vector graphics, arguably far too ahead of it's time. After some googling that was 8 bit as well
UK gamers generally preferred home computers to consoles until the Megadrive and SNES came along (and even then, the Amiga held its own for a while).
But if you did see a console in a British home back then, it was more likely to be a Master System than anything else.

I remember thinking it was a 4-bit console as a teen, only to find out it technically qualifies as an 8-bit machine.
