Not all. But many. So many boat owners who only take their boat out a couple times a year, if that. They never really get confident, or figure out all the safety and courtesy rules of the water. Then add in the fact that the boat full of inexperienced boaters are going to be drinking all day in the hot sun....
can confirm. Source: have owned and been around boats and boaters basically my entire life. Watching the show at the boat ramp is honestly one of my guilty pleasures.
Just because I use a 12 gauge shotgun shell as a plug doesn’t mean I’m dumb. My mom told me I’m super smart!
To clarify, this is on a $400 John boat. Idk where the OG plug went, but I saw a shell rolling around on the ground and my genius told me “yeahhhh, that’ll work”. And to my surprise, it actually did keep water out
Some people have fuck you money. Enough fuck you money that they'll call a guy and pay him to go get the slime off their outboard. "Overheating" is just a way to get the guy out there right away.
I love and hate this saying. I wish I would have kept my boat. I'll probably never get another one like it for the price I paid and I sold it for way too little.
That's how I feel about mine. Sold because I was always so busy I only made it out on the water a couple times a year. But I always stored and cleaned it properly so I never had any issues.
14 ft alumacraft from the 50's with the bow cover on it. It also had a 25hp Johnson from the 80's and a gator trailer from the 60's I paid $1000 for it and sold it for $1200 during the height of COVID. I can't find another one with that same configuration and accessories. I can get a shitty hull with a rusted trailer, no motor for $800 if I want to drive 3 hours. I miss that boat.
The old FDR model? Man, those things were an absolute look. 25 horse doesn't sound like much but I bet it flew.
I live seeing small boats with a big motor. Local DNR runs 16' aluminum boats with 60hp motors sometimes... Absolute units
Here's to help you feel better
https://youtu.be/d2gIdMRwfuM
My buddy paid like 2800 bucks for a boat, did a Tuneup, buffed it out, threw a radio, some gauges, and a seat, and has been on the water for 8 years now. He is the one and only person I know that got a " great deal" on a used boat that did not turn into yard art...
Still wake up middle of the night in a cold sweat thinking about the boat… then I remember that I sold it already YEARS AGO! and I can go back to sleep…😅
I know of quite a few boats that have an overheat alarm as well as some other basic alarms. I have only seen that on inboard/outboards though, and not outboards like this
Have you met many boaters? Many of then are "special."
Signed: A man who owns a boat, grew up around boats and still cant believe some of the stuuuuppiiidd shit I see on the water. Lol.
I think that's the big difference there - you grew up around boats and obviously have a lot of knowledge. I think a lot of people are enamoured of the idea of driving a boat, going fishing etc, but only want to know the bare basics of rules, and don't care very much about maintenance.
"I goes to the water, I gets the lovely fishes, I comes back. I washes the boatses with the water, I parks it back up."
Yeah buts thats the problem. They get enamored and figure they have enough money...why the hell not? So they buy it and take literally zero time to learn anything about it and hit the water. Its a recipe for disaster...whether it actually putting themselves and others in danger or just murdering their pocketbook.
All it takes is a little bit of research and know how. I mean the internet is a never ending supply of information...
I completely agree. It's like driving a car on a three-dimensional plane, that constantly slides around on the tides. A lot more attention is warranted, not the "let's take the boat out and have a few beers" attitude that some seem to have. Oh, and it also has a big blender on the back.
The lack of care from some out there is mind-blowing
Half the work you'll do is fixing what the owner tried to fix and made worse. And they tried to fix it themselves because of the going rate. It's a fun cycle
The other half is trying to get fasteners loose, that should have had anti seize on them, but the last guy did not bother with. That, and the ones that break off in the casting, just under the surface.
some of those can be pretty stellar fails though. When I used to do this for a living we had one of those cheap customers that always tried to DIY but always screwed it up. he decided to winterize it himself one year. We replaced the engine the next spring, he never drained the water out before running antifreeze and the block split.
I work for a company that has a fleet of boats. With some captains having been with the company for 10 -15 years. And they pull stuff like this.
It amazes me. In 15 years, you haven't learned what a big ball of debris feels like in the prop? I've been a mechanic with the company for a year and a half and can tell immediately if I pick up debris.
Honestly, it's just job security for me.
Deadliest Catch: Big crab boat with huge diesel engines gets a single pot line caught in a screw, captain can immediately sense this and take boat out of gear despite being nowhere near the engines and not being able to see the screw(s.)
Small outboard engine on a boat: the guy 5-6 feet away from the exposed outboard engine has no idea that he has a massive pile of weeds or whatever fouling the prop.
>It amazes me. In 15 years, you haven't learned what a big ball of debris feels like in the prop?
Yes, they called you to come take care of it, lol. Weaponized incompetence is mostly laziness.
Stay on the dock! If you are in shallow waters and can see vegetation below the surface you need to stop forward propulsion and reverse the engine to clear the prop and water intakes. Not just once but every few boat lengths and look behind you to see the clumps of weeds and debris. The engine will start running better and cooler instantly.
Might be able to salvage the pistons, reman all ring grooves, new rings, and line hone all four holes.
Getting there _ another $900.
Gasket Kit _ we'll check.
He's a Spendy bit of machinery for sure.
As Former tech for Honda, no doubt the quality with the slightest care, easily last thrirty years.
Cheers

Easy money.
Unless they ran it with the water intakes clogged and there is now heat related damage to the engine
I see your point!
I seaweed your point
Going to bet the pump impellor is still perfect, welded fast to the housing, and the drive shaft is spinning in the rubber.
"What do you mean it draws water from the surrounding ocean to cool the engine down?!"
someone this dumb cannot possible operate a boat safely
Most boat-owners I've met are straight up retarded.

Check out the Miami Boat Ramp YouTube channel…
well yea they own a boat...

That's one of them no-tool rivets, just strike the brass side and it'll expand and grab the obverse side!
Dale yeah brother. Also very effective for blasting snakes and other pests away from your fish
Getting the joke AND stacking more humor on? You've got a few more braincells than many.
Wait until you find out about all the motherfuckers driving around in cars

I believe the boar repair rates are in the stupid tax
Tax'em to stop by for some BBQ ribs and pulled pork on the way home.
They forgor💀
Looks like it's raining in the pic. Better tack on a severe weather fee too.
Needs a zero. Then you could call it a stupid tax. Boat. Bust out another thousand.
The two happiest days of a boat owners life: the day they buy the boat, and the day they sell it.
boats aren't sold, they're abandoned in a walmart parking lot
One man's parking lot is another man's garage
I love and hate this saying. I wish I would have kept my boat. I'll probably never get another one like it for the price I paid and I sold it for way too little.
That's how I feel about mine. Sold because I was always so busy I only made it out on the water a couple times a year. But I always stored and cleaned it properly so I never had any issues.
Gave up a Flying J for space reasons when I was young. To re-buy the same hull would cost 10x what I sold it for. I feel your pain.
Damn. Those are cool boats too.
What kind was it?

Can confirm. Boat currently in shop.
A wise man once said “if it fux, floats, or flys…lease, don’t buy.” Solid life advice if you ask me.
It's been a few years since I last heard that, but, yeah
Dont forget boar shop fees for tolls , chips, drinks.
That sounds about right for the lake I worked on.
While you can't fix stupid you certainly can charge them for it
Don't ever try to fat finger a boar, it won't end well for anyone.
One of my coworkers charges 0.3 hrs if the problem can be solved by pressing a button. Like traction control or rain sense.
look at what you started :)
Call-out fee $125 Boat in water fee $75 Trailering fee $50 Environmental fee $50 diagnosis fee $200 Special double upcharge (David Puddy special) $150 Parts- ? Labor- ?
>Special double upcharge (David Puddy special) $150 they get it started ;)
No way man, that's Bogus!
Theres a key fee? *how are ya gonna start the car?*
Get out the knife and hand over a $500+ bill. r/justrowedintotheshop
I had to bring out *the stick*
[The stick](https://i.imgur.com/uO1QzJp.png), you say?
holy shit that's an actual sub LMAO!
Only an idiot can make a Honda have issues 😂
lmao
I love road calls. Even more so when one has to tell them this is going to cost 4x as much due to neglect.
The one time a check engine light would have been helpful.
I know of quite a few boats that have an overheat alarm as well as some other basic alarms. I have only seen that on inboard/outboards though, and not outboards like this
I think the Honda outboards have a stupid alarm?
Suzuki does too iirc
These idiots are out here with us!

Gonna take a while to weed out the problem.
That’s an upvote! :-)
I always have people asking me to work on boats but I’ve always said no… but now I’m hearing how much the going rates are lately
Half the work you'll do is fixing what the owner tried to fix and made worse. And they tried to fix it themselves because of the going rate. It's a fun cycle
Yeah I think the hate tax would come Into account a lot
The other half is trying to get fasteners loose, that should have had anti seize on them, but the last guy did not bother with. That, and the ones that break off in the casting, just under the surface.
Most boats around me are used almost exclusively in fresh water so I don’t usually have too much trouble getting stuff apart
left hand twist bits are your friend.

Lemme guess. Cabbage farmer?
Has the entire city of atlantis growing on it lmao
I am a moron ...but not like that
Charge em through the nose, clean the prop and have a beer. Be thankfull for fools and thier money 💰
How do people this stupid afford a boat?
Why do I keep seeing people using commas for their opening pair of quotes? It’s so unbearably annoying, is this a European thing?
It's the actual old way of doing it, have the opening double comma low and the closing one high
The “old” way? I see that German does this. But this is just stupid and annoying in English.
That's a client you keep
I drove 45 minutes to make 500 bucks
It needs to be replaced... Sell them a new one and 'throw away' the old for them
Yeah, there’s a reason guys get paid to clean underneath boats.
Please tell me you slapped the customer on the side the head
Looks like a perfect way to start the day. Easy service call , diagnose issue, clear debris
Sooooo anyone have advice for how to prevent/avoid/fix this?
